The road is fully closed off on the northbound side between junction 21 near Warrington and junction 21A for the M62 Croft Interchange.

A serious accident on the M6 has brought the road to a standstill as emergency services arrive at the scene.

The road is fully closed off on the northbound side between junction 21 near Warrington and junction 21A for the M62 Croft Interchange after an accident at around 1am. It is currently unknown what happened on the road, although National Highways described it as a "serous incident". It is feared the section may remain closed until at least midday.

They said on X, formerly Twitter, earlier this morning: "The M6 in Cheshire is closed northbound between J21 Woolston Interchange (Warrington, Irlam A57) and J21a Croft Interchange (Liverpool, Southport M62 (M57); Manchester, Bolton, Leeds M62).

"This is following a serious incident within the Croft Interchange. North West Motorway Police Group and North West Ambulance Service are on scene. National Highways have Traffic Officers in attendance also, to assist with traffic management."

Traffic cameras in the area have shown large queues building as morning commuters attempt to get to work. A number of diversions are in place for drivers to follow as emergency teams tend to those involved in the incident.

North West Motorway Police said on social media: "M6 Northbound J21 to J21a NB remains closed at this time due to the police incident at the location. Officers are working hard to get the carriageway reopened as soon as possible.

"The roadworks in place J23 to J26 have been removed now, so the section is now open."
