Baileys has launched a new flavour in the UK just in time for St Patrick's Day, but shoppers keen to get a taste will need to act quickly. Hot on the heels of various other cult flavours including Baileys Colada, Birthday Cake and Vanilla Mint Shake, the team behind the Christmas staple has announced the launch of their latest limited edition flavour - Mint Choc Shake.

The new flavour blends the classic taste of Baileys with fresh mint, dark chocolate and creamy vanilla flavours and is available in selected bars and restaurants now ahead of St Patrick's Day this weekend. It will also be available at Sainsbury’s, Co-Op, Asda, Morrisons, Tesco and on Amazon from April 1.

For lots of us, Baileys is an essential Christmas tipple and the perfect mixture of rich, sweet, milkiness with a warming Irish whiskey kick. But makers Diageo are keen to ensure it's not just a wintry treat and have over the last few years launched a host of different flavours to tempt shoppers to partake year round, including tiramisu to espresso coffee, salted caramel to Eton mess (no, I'm not sure about that last one either) and even a Deliciously Lightversion of the traditional Baileys Original, which comes with 40% fewer calories and,in my opinion, doesn't sacrifice on taste.

As The Mirror's resident fan of Baileys and similar liqueurs - last Christmas my big discovery was Hotel Chocolat's Espresso Martini Liqueur which tastes just like tiramisu and has now taken up permanent residence in my drinks cupboard - I was very happy to taste test the latest flavour and can confirm that it even tops Baileys' previous best-selling limited edition flavour.

As long-term devotees know, last summer the brand released the Baileys Vanilla Mint Shake and it sold out pretty much immediately, leaving shoppers to buy pricey imported bottles of the classic from online specialist shops like The Bottle Club. But this year's Mint Choc Shake is a tasty alternative, will be more widely available and, with a £17 price tag, comes in at a much more palatable price.

This beautifully balanced mixture is perfect for drizzling over ice cream or in a milkshake, as well as in the more traditional (and my preferred) way over ice. It's very green, which I suppose makes it apt for St Patrick's Day although it also gives it a look like a Star Wars-style swamp - which was ironic when I served it using a huge Death Star ice cube.

Fans of last year's shake flavour will be thrilled at a minty return but, for my money, this is actually even tastier. It has a slightly deeper dark chocolate taste which gives a solid kick without the cocoa overpowering either the delicate mint or the classic warmth of Baileys that underpins it all.

While it's getting distributed more widely than last year's version, this is definitely one to pick up when you see it to avoid disappointment - it's definitely literally and figuratively mint and a great choice for St Patrick's Day and beyond.

However, for purists who'd rather have a pint of the black stuff to mark March 17, a USB gadget is also available to allow drinkers to pour the perfect Guinness at home. See how we got on with it here.
