Helldivers 2 crossplay update in the works – try these workarounds until the bug is fixed
Helldivers 2 has had its fair share of issues since it launched last month, but the developer has been quick to blast bugs as they rear their heads, and is currently working on a fix for the crossplay issues to "determine the root cause and find a resolution".
All things considered, Helldivers 2 has had a successful launch. Sure, there were server issues but that was due to the swarms of players eager to lay down their lives in the name of managed democracy. The server cap was bumped up twice to accommodate the influx and Arrowhead has been incredibly transparent with what's going on behind the scenes and the bugs it's currently tackling.
Updates have been rolling out frequently alongside newly-added content like mechs that were unlocked as part of a Major Order, a new flying bug variant called Shriekers (that CEO Johan Pilestedt teased on Twitter ahead of their appearance in game this week), and the introduction of the Cutting Edge Warbond – a second premium battle pass joining the existing two that have been in-game since launch.
The latest issue players have been running into is the Helldivers 2 crossplay bug which has plaguing teammates trying to play together across PC and PS5 (the game isn't on Xbox Series X|S for now, although Xbox boss Phil Spencer is keen to see it make the jump). The bug was acknowledged as part of update 1.000.102 which dropped on Tuesday, March 12 and since then, Arrowhead's social media and community manager, Katherine Baskin, has updated players on the game's official Discord, saying:
"We successfully reproduced the issue preventing crossplay players from accepting friend requests. Our programmers are working to determine the root cause and find a resolution. As soon as we have more info, we'll update you!"

The turnaround on getting problems addressed is generally pretty speedy and the studio is quick to update players on its progress and any hurdles it runs into. So expect a Helldivers 2 crossplay fix soon. Until then, here are a handful of workarounds to get you in-game with your fellow Helldivers on PC and PS5.
How to fix Helldivers 2 crossplay bug
Turn everything off and on again
The first thing you can try to fix the Helldivers 2 crossplay bug is to turn everything off and on again; your console (power cycling is the best option), your router, and toggle crossplay and public / friends only options. Maybe your internet was just having a funny five minutes and you're actually a part of the playerbase who aren't experiencing this problem. Reboot everything just to make sure and if you're still having issues, move on to the next suggested solution.
Change your Steam display name
There has been talk that the Helldivers 2 crossplay bug might be triggered by special characters in your Steam display name as well as the length not meeting the minimum PlayStation character limit. Your Steam display name can be between two and 32 characters long and include special characters but some players across reddit threads are speculating that this might be a potential cause of the Helldivers 2 crossplay bug.
PSN IDs have rules of their own which stipulate that "the online ID must be 3 to 16 characters and can consist of letters, numbers, hyphens (-) and underscores (_). The first character must be a letter. The online ID must not be the same as your password. Letters are not case-sensitive."
If the turning it off and on again suggestion didn't yield results, this should be your next port of call. Tweak your Steam display name to meet the PSN ID rules, keeping to eight minimum as per the reddit suggestions (just in case) and fingers crossed it works!
Create an open lobby and manually find it
This workaround comes from a PSA on reddit and doesn't have a 100% success rate either but might as well give it a whirl until Arrowhead rolls out a fix for the Helldivers 2 crossplay bug! Party up with your friends first of all as there's some coordinating to be done to carry this out.
This method involves one of the group creating an open lobby and ideally on a difficulty setting that won't see much traffic – Trivial, Easy or Suicide are good ones to try out. You'll need to be on the same planet as well, obviously. Their job is to keep kicking players until you spot them on the planet and can drop in, and at that point they can change the settings from public to friends only. If no one is dropping into the lobby at all, that suggests there may be some issues afoot, and if you can't find their misson on the planet, likewise there's a problem.
This is the time to close and reopen the game, and toggle public/ friends only on and off as well as the crossplay settings. Patience is key in this method, as the same redditor demonstrates on their Twitch channel. The video is 13 minutes long, but you can skip right ahead to the 11:18 mark to see a successful run of this method in action. Everything before this point shows the slog to get into a game with their friend and the turning things off and on again approach.
Hopefully Arrowhead will be swooping to our rescue soon like Pelican-1 coming to extract you. Keep an eye on the Helldivers 2 socials but the best bet to stay on top of updates and news as it happens is the game's official Discord server.
