Amy Dowden found ‘unresponsive’ during cancer treatment and nearly died
Amy Dowden recalled the moment she almost died after developing a sepsis infection during cancer treatment last year.
The 33 year old married professional dancer was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in May last year and it was during her first bout of chemotherapy that she went into septic shock - the same infection that took the life of her aunt. Amy was left "unresponsive" after the septic infection took hold. She had been rushed into hospital after she collapsed at her home but at that time, her husband Ben and her parents had been assured by doctors that she would be able to return home.
However, the following day Amy had developed sepsis. The TV personality recently revealed that she is now cancer free following a series on in-depth tests. Speaking to Andy Coulson's Crisis What Crisis? podcast, she said: "My parents went into meltdown mode, Ben went into protection mode of them, and when they got to the hospital I wasn’t in the room. I was having an emergency CT scan and my mum had to walk away."
Amy continued: "My husband said that he’d said my heart rate and my blood pressure was so low that I probably wouldn’t function more than sixteen hours, my organs would go into failure. They felt I’d gone into septic shock." However, Amy started to respond to a new batch of antibiotics but recalled how difficult it was to see the trauma on the faces of her parents.
She explained: "I saw the pain in my parents’ eyes, and I don’t think they’ve been the same since. It was so tough for them to have watched that, especially after what we’d been through with my auntie. And yes, I don’t think they’ve been same or never will be the same again."
Strictly's Molly Rainford and Tyler West fuel romance rumours while on tourLast month, she shared the happiest news of her life as she announced to the world that there was "no evidence of disease" which she understandably said were "words I dreamed of." Taking to Instagram, she told her followers: "My biggest accomplishment yet! I won’t be getting the all-clear for 5 years especially with a hormone fed cancer. But it was all worth it. Words I never thought I’d hear at one point."
She added: "So grateful for all the care I received and continue to have. To my family and friends who supported me unconditionally and to you guys! Thank you!" It will take five years before Amy can officially be given the all clear but that is not stopping her from enjoying each and every moment of life.
And this will explain why she is currently enjoying the sights of Marrakesh in Morocco, along with her twin sister Rebecca and fellow Strictly star Carlos Gu. She wrote on social media: "Stop and smell the roses. After the past few months this quote is one I remind myself of daily ‘You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry. Don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.’ Having such a lovely time with my twin @becky_dowden and it’s so lush @gkx_carlos booked on for a surprise.”
