The Cheltenham Festival collided with football on St Patrick's Thursday with a number of famous faces claiming victory.

Sir Alex Ferguson claimed two successes as Monmiral and Protektorat claimed the Pertemps Network Final and Ryanair Chase respectively. One of his former opponents Harry Redknapp also enjoyed a productive evening at Cheltenham.

He saw Shakem Uparry claim a shock success in the TrustATrader Plate Handicap Chase. Away from football, there were also a number of exciting races throughout the rest of the day.

Teahupoo ran out victorious in the Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle having been much fancied. Grey Dawning won the first race of the day.

One Cheltenham punter has gotten very lucky thanks to the football.

According to Betfair, they have secured a huge £16,200 accumulator win. The Betfair customer lodged a £5 on Monmiral (35/1), Protektorat (9/1) and Shakem Up’arry (8/1) victories - owned by Sir Alex Ferguson and Harry Redkanpp at odds of 3,239/1.

Betfair spokesperson Barry Orr said: "The punter must not only be a Racing fan, but also a big football fan. The two ex-bosses are massive Racing enthusiasts and Cheltenham is the ‘Champions League’ of the Horse Racing world, so for both to score on the biggest stage is a great result."

Redknapp speaks after memorable success

Speaking after celebrating his first-ever Cheltenham win, Harry Redknapp said: “My nan got me into it, she used to be a bookie’s runner back when it was illegal! She ended up in Poplar police station every week!

"Me and Sir Alex both love the racing, love the football too. This means more than winning I’m A Celebrity … to have a winner at Cheltenham, it’s one of the greatest days of my life.”

Kennedy hails winner

“He's an amazing horse, makes my job very easy. He jumps great, he's a pleasure to ride,” Jack Kennedy said to ITV Sport after claiming victory in the Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle.

“I wasn’t too bad [after missing out so far this week], but I’m relieved to get off the mark.”
