Southgate drops Phillips but recalls Gomez and Toney to latest England squad
Ivan Toney has been recalled to the England squad after his eight-month ban for breaching FA betting rules.
But there is no place for Kalvin Phillips even though he moved to West Ham on loan to try and secure his place for this summer’s Euros. And there is also no way back for Raheem Sterling as it looks the Chelsea forward’s England career is over after 82 caps.
Toney now has the chance to get into this summer's Euros squad for Germany after being called up for friendlies with Brazil and Belgium.
There is also a senior call-up for Newcastle ’s Anthony Gordon. It is the last squad England boss Gareth Southgate will name before he picks his 23 players for the Euros.
Toney won his one and only cap 12 months ago as a late substitute against Ukraine at Wembley.

But was left in the footballing wilderness two months later, in May 2023, when banned for 232 breaches of the FA's betting rules, leaving his hopes of making Euro 2024 in serious doubt.
Joe Gomez has also been recalled after THREE YEARS out, while Jarrad Branthwaite and Anthony Gordon have both been handed their first call ups to the senior squad.
Liverpool defender Gomez has been named in the Three Lions squad for the first time since October 2020, following a string of impressive club performances. Southgate has kept close tabs on Gomez in recent weeks and knows his versatility across the back line could be useful.

Branthwaite, 20, will be regarded as an outside bet, but the Everton defender will be delighted his performances this season have been recognised.
Phillips, meanwhile, still has an outside chance if he can somehow rediscover his best form and there are injuries to other midfielders. Phillips was England's player of the year in 2022, but his career nosedived following a £50m move to Manchester City and he joined West Ham on-loan in January, where he has also struggled to secure regular starts.
