Police investigating after officers had to ram a car to bring it to a halt when its brakes seemingly failed have made an arrest.

Huge queues were caused on the M62 on Wednesday, March 6, when Merseyside Police and Greater Manchester Police used specialist tactics on the Jaguar I-PACE and blocked it between a number of police vehicles, to bring the car to a stop. Pictures from the scene show the black vehicle wedged in between two Matrix vehicles from Merseyside Police.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm following an investigation, a man has been arrested in relation to an incident on the M62 on Wednesday 6 March when officers from the force Roads Policing Unit were called to help stop a vehicle safely. An investigation, supported by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), is underway and a 31-year-old man from Bolton has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance. He has been taken into police custody to be questioned."

The terrifying incident unfolded on the eastbound carriageway on Wednesday, between J11 for Birchwood and J12. All lanes were closed for a short while with traffic stopped owing to the police response. North West Motorway Police said at the time: "Police currently have a lane 3 and 4 closure on M62 EB J11 to 12. "This is following the use of tactics to stop an electric vehicle with an electric fault where the driver was unable to brake. Motorway officers from Merseyside, Cheshire and GMP brought the vehicle to a safe stop."
