There's some good news for fans of an acclaimed noughties sitcom as a number of cast members reunited to work on a follow-up project which it's hoped will be released this year.

It's been announced that characters from Green Wing will return, though in a podcast series. The Channel 4 show, which followed staff at the fictional East Hampton Hospital Trust, initially ran for two series from 2004 to 2006. It later returned for a one-off special which was broadcast in 2007.

The cast of the BAFTA winning show included Tamsin Greig, now 57, who played surgical registrar Caroline Todd. She had starred in the show alongside the likes of Stephen Mangan, Olivia Colman and Mark Heap, before having reunited with the latter on Friday Night Dinner several years later.

Green Wing will celebrate its 20th anniversary later year and ahead of the occasion Metro asked Tamsin about the prospect of a reunion. She revealed that some of the cast had already got back together to record an audio project.

Tamsin added: "There are six episodes and the characters are still working in that hospital East Hampton Trust, and it's in the same vein of the very visual humour that you get in the show, but it's now of course, an audio comedy."

She continued: "It's really lovely, because apparently our voices don't age and that's great." Tamsin said that it was recorded last year and when asked about a release date for the podcast series, the cast member said that she suspects it will be out sometime later this year for the anniversary.

Green Wing premiered on Channel 4 September 2004 and the first series, which consisted of nine episodes, concluded the following month. The second series was released through the broadcast two years later and it considered of eight episodes.

Some of the cast later reunited, including for the Green Wing Special, which was broadcast in 2007. It's the most recent episode of the acclaimed show and continued the plot from the second series, with no new episodes having been released in the more than a decade since.

Tamsin, Stephen, Olivia and Mark were among the show's main cast. Others included Sarah Alexander, Sally Bretton, Oliver Chris and Michelle Gomez. They were joined by Pippa Haywood, Katie Lyons, Lucinda Raikes, Julian Rhind-Tutt and Karl Theobald. It's yet to be announced who will return in the upcoming project though.
