A shopper almost bit off more than he wanted to chew after finding a whopping locust in his bag of celery.

Stunned Lee Westacott found the bug on the inside of the door of his fridge after unloading his haul from Aldi following his weekly trip to the supermarket. He believes the locust was lurking in the bag of veg he had earlier bought and made its escape it had been opened and placed on the shelf.

Lee, a cable jointer, from Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, was preparing his meal when he was given a fright. He say he approached Aldi to alert them of the situation and was told he would be sent a £5 voucher after sending the company photos of what he found.

The 39-year-old was shocked to see the creature but it wasn't all bad as his son was thrilled by the discovery. He said: "I was cutting some beef and got the celery out. I can only think it came out the celery bag and got stuck in the fridge. I was a bit shocked at first but my son was amazed with it.

"It was probably about three inches - it's quite a big bug. It's like a jacked-up grasshopper. It's now in a bag in the kitchen. We bought some celery and some other bits of veg so I'm guessing it's come out of one of those packets. I have contacted [Aldi] and they've sent me an email back.

"They saying they'll give me a £5 goodwill voucher to use for a future shop. Initially, I didn't know if it had been all over the food in the fridge. Aldi said what I could do was take the pack of celery back to them and they'd refund the bag but I'm probably going to throw most of it away."

An Aldi spokesperson said: "While it has not been possible to establish whether this insect came from an Aldi product, such a rare finding can occasionally occur with products that are grown in natural conditions. We have apologised to Mr Westacott and would encourage him to return the packaging of any opened fresh produce to his nearest store for a full refund."

It's not the only eye-opening customer find. Last March, an Aldi shopper spoke of her shock after she claims she found what appeared to be a 'dead snake' in a tin of baked beans. The 26-year-old from Porth in the county district of Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales, says she purchased the tin of Corale premium quality baked beans when she 'almost jumped back' after opening the lid.

She told Wales Online: "I physically couldn't bring myself to touch it. So I poked it with a fork and it all moved at once, after which point I refused to look again. So I wrapped it up and took it to Aldi to complain and they gave me two bottles of wine as a goodwill gesture."

After issuing her an apology, an Aldi spokesperson explained that the strange-looking object may have been perishing food caused by a breach in the packaging. They said: "Whilst we would not be able to explain the exact cause of this, it may have been due to a breach in the packaging which has allowed air to enter and cause the item to perish."
