The Princess of Wales made an all-too familiar mistake when she headed out on a shopping trip with her children - and it will really resonate with fellow parents.

Kate is known to be a hands-on mum, whether she's baking birthday cakes for her children or heading out on the school run. And in 2018, she was spotted out and about with Prince George and Princess Charlotte as they shopped for new school shoes.

The royal trio headed to the Peter Jones department store in Sloane Square, London. But mum Kate had made a slip-up. And a source told Hello! that she forgot to take socks for George and Charlotte to wear when they were trying on their new shoes.

The youngsters were wearing their summer sandals when they went to pick out their new kicks. So like so many mums before her, the princess had to borrow socks from the store.

Despite being one of the most famous women in the world, Kate has a much more 'normal' mum life than most people would imagine. She even reportedly has a secret code she uses if she feels she needs to calm her children down when they are in public.

Author Tom Quinn wrote in his book Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up In The Royal Family : "When Prince Louis misbehaved at the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee, for example, by sticking his tongue out at his mother, Kate's reaction was praised by teams of expert commentators.

"She apparently used a secret code to calm the children, as she does on occasions - she simply says, 'Let's take a break'. But as a former staffer explained, the children know these few words carry far more weight than we might imagine."

Kate was previously praised by one royal expert for being such an involved mum, even deciding to skip joining Prince William in Singapore for the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony in order to help Prince George through his school exams.

Jennie Bond told OK!: "I cheer every time I hear that Kate is putting her children first, and shame on anyone who criticises her for doing so. Kate is a modern, dedicated and hands-on mum and I think she is showing us that being a parent is one of the most important roles in life.

"Management teams across the country would do well to take that on board and allow some flexibility where possible to let men and women be the best parents they can."
