Jamie Carragher endured a painfully awkward exchange with Kate Abdo during the pair's Champions League coverage on Tuesday evening.

The former Liverpool ace saw a joke land flat concerning the latter's relationship, following Arsenal's win over Porto. While wearing a Gunners shirt, Carragher suggested that Abdo should be next to don the top before the presenter suggested that she was 'too loyal' for such an action.

The CBS Sports Golazo show has built its reputation on seeing the team of Carragher, Abdo, Thierry Henry and Micah Richards tease each other but on this occasion, the defender missed the mark. Carragher questioned Abdo's relationship with Deontay Wilder's trainer Malik Scott.

The 46-year-old pundit opened the exchange: "You [Henry] can wear it next and for the last part [of the show] you [Abdo] have got to wear it."

"No, I am loyal," Abdo returned quickly before Carragher fired back: "To who?" Abdo made her footballing loyalties clear and said: "Manchester United, thank you very much".

Carragher then delivered the fateful line in deadpan fashion: "Not to Malik". Henry's head spun straight in Abdo's direction and not even Richard's hearty chuckle emerged as the presenter's response forced Carragher to laugh at his own joke.

"What? Why would you say that?" said the broadcaster before Carragher attempted to explain himself. "He hasn't had a mention in the show yet, has he?"

Abdo's relationship status has long been a topic to poke fun at during CBS's Champions League coverage. Last week saw the couple go public with their partnership and the prospect of marriage touted during the show.

Former Ballon d'Or ceremony host Abdo shut down the prospect of her other half having a stag do after Henry and Carragher had pitched the idea of receiving an invite.

Scott amassed a 38-3-1 professional record before becoming a trainer and working with former world champion Deontay Wilder. That prompted Richards to ask whether the former boxer was 'under the thumb'.

Scott racked up a record of 38-3-1 as a heavyweight and fought for the last time in 2016. The fighter then became head coach for Deontay Wilder in 2021 with the first fight working together being the loss to Tyson Fury. Scott had previously suffered a first-round knockout to Wilder in 2014.
