Maintaining pristine grass while being a proud dog owner might sound a bit of a challenge, but it can be done.

With the right measures in place, there's no reason you can't have that thriving lawn you always wanted - while still keeping your furry friend happy and healthy. Timothy Greene, an expert from iCANLAWN.com, said: "A lush and resilient lawn is within reach for every dog owner - it's about choosing the right tactics that balance the joy of a vibrant garden with the playfulness of our canine companions."

Choose the right lawn seed

When selecting grass seed, Mr Greene recommends going for varieties known for their hardiness.

"This sets the foundation for a robust lawn that can withstand the enthusiastic romps and playful antics of your pets," he said. "Look for mixtures labelled as 'hardwearing' or 'durable'. Very strong grass seeds, such as Tough Stuff Lush Lawn, for instance, not only withstand heavy use but also add a touch of luxury to your lawn. It's a perfect choice for dog owners seeking both durability and aesthetics."

Use pet-safe lawn feed

"For a pet-safe lawn, use a feed made up of natural ingredients rich in essential nutrients for year-round care," Mr Greene advises, suggesting gardeners consider something like All Natural Nutriboost. Apply it in warmer weather, starting from May onwards, to allow the natural ingredients to break down and work their magic on your lawn," he said.

Address dog pee burns

Dog pee can create unsightly patches on your lawn but Mr Greene offers a simple yet effective solution. He said: "After your pet relieves themselves, promptly water the area. This not only prevents burning but also helps to dilute the nitrogen in their urine, promoting a healthier and greener lawn. Make it a habit, and you'll see the difference.

"If your lawn looks like a patchwork quilt due to dog pee or digging spots, follow these steps for a quick recovery. Carefully remove the damaged grass by digging it out, ensuring you reach the roots. The next step is to fill the excavated area with quality topsoil, levelling it with the surrounding lawn using a rake."

Mr Greene added: "Sprinkle those tough grass seeds on the patch. This specially formulated seed mix promotes quick and robust growth, blending seamlessly with your existing grass. Lastly, rake in the seed gently and water the patched area daily for at least three weeks, avoiding watering on rainy days. This consistent care ensures proper establishment and a uniform, vibrant lawn."
