Jamie Carragher hits back at Kyle Walker over 'mind games' in now-deleted post

Jamie Carragher accused Kyle Walker and Manchester City of playing "mind games" and trying to "change the narrative" following their 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday - before deleting his social media post.

Liverpool were left incensed after they were not awarded a late penalty for a challenge by Jeremy Doku on Alexis Mac Allister, but referee Michael Oliver did not think it was a penalty and VAR Stuart Attwell agreed with his decision.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp fumed that it was "100 per cent a foul", while Walker praised Oliver for not "crumbling" under pressure. "My view is the referee and the VAR made a decision on what it is," the City defender said in an interview with Sky Sports.

"I feel that the ref reffed it really, really well. I feel once you have Anfield and the crowd behind them, he could have crumbled. But that shows his experience, that shows his character and that's why he's regarded probably as one of the best referees in this country and in the world at the minute.

"The VAR has checked it, the ref has done it, that's all I'm going to say." Carragher, though, hit back at Walker's comments on social media as he wrote: "I didn't think the penalty decision was a huge mistake by the official.

"But this interview is bizarre! Man City press officer setting it up to try & change the narrative that they were lucky with the decision!!! Mind games." Carragher has since deleted the post, with the Daily Mail claiming he did so after he was informed the interview had been arranged ahead of the game.

The 1-1 draw leaves just one point separating Arsenal, Liverpool and City in the title race and Carragher believes it is Pep Guardiola's side which will go on and lift the trophy. Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Carragher said: " I am going to go with Manchester City.

"I just think the next game is pivotal. I think Liverpool needs a draw, it is a great result for them. I don't think they need Manchester City winning that game because you look at the other fixtures and you think where Manchester City will drop points if they don't drop them against Arsenal."

Arsenal legend Ian Wright, meanwhile, unsurprisingly backed his former club to win the league for the first time in 20 years. " Arsenal. Of course I am going to say Arsenal. With what happened last season, they know exactly what they need to do," Wright said.

"They are in great form, all of their players are fit now. The players are very focused, the manager is very ambitious and focused on what they want to do, of course I am going to say Arsenal, you have to!"
