Margot Robbie 's fans were left unimpressed by her Oscars red carpet look after she ditched the pink to show up in an all-black ensemble.

The Barbie star has been stepping out in an array of colourful outfits over awards season in homage to her role as the pink-loving icon but opted for a more demure look for The Academy Awards. Dressed in a sparkling black sequinned strapless gown from Versace she showcased her curves with draping around her hips.

She accessorised her look with a gold cuff and matching ring from designer Fred Leighton. The Australian actress also wore her blonde hair loose in a tousled style and finished off her look with a natural nude-toned makeup palette.

One wrote: "She should have owned the carpet. This is... not even renting." Another added: "Such a boring look. Come on." A third slammed the look referring to her past red carpet appearances promoting Barbie: "The most epic and stylish fashion streak of all time ended with this absolutely boring yawn of a dress."

Another social media user agreed: "So disappointed! I was expecting EPIC." Not stopping there Margot's undone hair style then came under fire with one fan writing: "The hair?" and adding a crying emoji. Another observed: "All her gowns are great but she can do better with the hair. I don't know what her hairstylist is always thinking?"

Margot's appearance at the Oscars came after she failed to pick up a nomination for her role in Barbie. While the film did have eight nominations both Margot and female director Greta Gerwig were snubbed when it came to a nod for their work.

Margot's co-star America Ferrera was nominated for Best Supporting Actress but on the night she lost out to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her role in The Holdovers. Ryan Gosling was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken, but the award went to Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer.

Barbie also received nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Achievement in Production Design and Achievement in Costume Design but did not win any of the awards. However, the film managed to nab an award for Best Original Song, with Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell collecting the prize for the emotional ballad What Was I Made For? pipping Ryan Gosling's I'm Just Ken to the post.
