Jonathan Ross will be hoping Cillian Murphy doesn't catch up on ITV's coverage of the 96th Academy Awards, thanks to the British TV presenter forgetting the Oscar winner is a proud Irish man multiple times through the broadcast.

Despite Murphy literally speaking in Irish as he collected his first ever Oscar in the early hours of Monday morning, Ross couldn't help cheekily trying to claim the Peaky Blinders actor as British - must to the disgust of ITV viewers watching Ross front the channel's Oscar commentary.

Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic Oppenheimer swept the Oscars, winning seven awards. The film about J Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist described as the father of the atomic bomb, was named best picture while Irish star Murphy won best actor and Nolan took the best director award. Robert Downey Jr was named best supporting actor for his turn as Lewis Strauss, head of the Atomic Energy Commission.

As his name was announced as best actor winner, Murphy, 47, kissed his wife, the artist Yvonne McGuinness, before heading to the stage, where he said making the film had "been the wildest, most creatively satisfying journey". "I am a very proud Irishman standing here tonight," he added.

Acknowledging that "we are all living in Oppenheimer’s world now", he added: "I would like to dedicate this to the peacemakers of the world." At the end of his speech, he spoke in Irish, saying "go raibh maith agat" which means thank you. But despite Murphy making it crystal clear he is Irish and proud, Ross slipped up a couple of times when chatting about wins for British stars and filmmakers.

"Who has ever thought Cillian Murphy was British?? LMAO, Jonathan Ross is off his rocker," one fumed on Twitter (X) as they watched Ross host the ITV coverage. "Sorry but did Jonathan Ross just talk about British people winning all the awards and then include Cillian Murphy??? #Oscars," another asked.

A third raged: "Took 3 mins for Jonathan Ross on ITV to claim Cillian’s win as ‘our’ win like he literally got on stage and pointed out he was Irish?" One ITV viewer predicted how Murphy will react if he ever sees Ross' gaffe, quipping: "Not Jonathan Ross saying British nominee for best actor referring to IRISH Cillian Murphy. Just know he’d be so fuming."

Ross also irked fans of late Friends star Matthew Perry thanks to his comments after the Oscars paid tribute to the late Chandler Bing actor. The In Memoriam part of the 2024 Academy Awards started with a clip of Alexei Navalny from the Oscar-winning documentary Navalny. Stars like Sir Michael Gambon, Harry Belafonte, Alan Arkin and British actor Julian Sands were remembered while Andrea Bocelli and his son Matteo sang Time To Say Goodbye.

Also remembered were Andre Braugher, Tom Wilkinson, Glynis Johns, Jane Birkin, Ryan O'Neal, Robbie Robertson, Carl Weathers, Glenda Jackson, William Friedkin and Tina Turner. But everyone was waiting for Matthew's tribute because the BAFTAs didn't mention the late actor in London last month.

"Welcome back. A touching tribute from the Academy there of some incredible performers and filmmakers sadly no longer with us. Always a sombre moment," Jonathan said as ITV coverage returned to the studio following the In Memoriam segment. The presenter then added: "It was nice to see Matthew Perry included, even though he's not primarily known for his work in cinema, they probably could have done it without him."

"Jonathan ross' comment on matthew perry was so fing unnecessary, what the f," one Twitter user fumed following Jonathan's observation, with another angry viewer adding to the thread: "Totally sick of ross and his chums now. Get this over with." A third just took issue with the ITV coverage in general, raging: "The biggest loser tonight is us Brits who have to listen to Jonathan Ross in the break. All these ITV lot have no idea what they're talking about."

In addition to playing Chandler Bing in Friends for 10 series, Matthew also popped up on the big screen multiple times throughout his career. The late actor was known for his leading roles in films Fools Rush In (1997), The Whole Nine Yards (2000), Serving Sara (2002) and 17 Again (2009).
