Vanessa Hudgens kicked off the 96th Academy Awards making her baby bump debut, while Oppenheimer ended the night winning Best Picture.

The Oscars are one of the most anticipated events of the showbiz calendar and took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

All eyes were on Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt, which took home seven out of its 13 nominations.

Elsewhere, despite the fury surrounding Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie's snub with Barbie, Ryan Gosling received a standing ovation for his performance for I'm Just Ken, which is part of the film's soundtrack. He brought out his male cast members and even included the Guns N' Roses iconic guitarist, Slash. Ryan was also nominated for best supporting actor but lost to Robert Downey Jr.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the award show but not many viewers were happy with his monologue. He even poked fun at Donald Trump who called him the "worst Oscars host."

While presenting the last award of the night, Al Pacino gave an 'awkward' Best Picture presentation. Al strangely introduced the winner of the award announcing that "my eyes see Oppenheimer" and failed to mention the other nominees.

Royal Family mocked by Oscars fans

The Royal Family found themselves ruthlessly mocked on social media as the 96th Academy Awards aired, hours on from major photo agencies issuing a "kill notice" on a picture of Kate Middleton and her three children.

Kensington Palace attempted to shut down speculation regarding the mum-of-three on Mother's Day amid her absence from public life. Major photo agencies, including Getty Images, removed the snap from their collections just hours on from Kensington Palace releasing it, claiming the image has been manipulated and edited. The agencies also disputed the claim Prince William took the picture this week.

One person on X wrote: "'And the Oscar for Best Photo Editing goes to........ #KateMiddleton.'" Another wrote: "The Kate Middleton Mother's Day Photo by the Royal Family" as the winner of the non-existent Worst Visual Effects" award."

Ukranian director wins award but wished he 'never made film'

After accepting the Academy Award for Best Documentary, director Mstyslav Chernov made a wish to take it all back.

The movie, The Associated Press' 20 Days in Mariupol, took viewers back to the initial Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The documentary followed the days of war, horror and human loss. Upon receiving the Oscar, Mstyslav said he was honoured, explaining it was the first Oscar in Ukranian history.

However, he added: "But probably I will be the first director on this stage who will say I wish I never made this film. I wish to be able to exchange this to Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities. I wish to give all the recognition to Russia not killing tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainians." He continued: "I wish for them to release all the hostages, all the soldiers who are protecting their lands, all the civilians who are now in their jails. But I cannot change the history. I cannot change the past."

Many were happy to see Al Pacino present the Best Picture category but the excitement was taken away and became “awkward.”

Al strangely introduced the winner of the award announcing that "my eyes see Oppenheimer" won Best Picture. Fans were taken back when he did not even introduce the nominees.

They took to X, formerly Twitter, sharing their reactions to the moment. One person wrote: "Al Pacino just going 'uh yeah Oppenheimer' lmaooo perfect ending no notes." Another added: "Did a cr***y job! Did not even introduce the nominees." And a third wrote: "That was so awkward lmaoooo."

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt paid tribute to all the stunt performers in cinema history. Ryan thought it was the perfect time to throw a jab at Oppenheimer and said: "I figured out why they call it ‘Barbenheimer’ and they didn’t call it ‘Oppenbarbie.’ I think you guys are the tail end of that cause you were riding Barbie’s coattails all summer."

Fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, think that Ryan "ate" that speech. Both Barbie and Oppenheimer were released on July 21, 2023 and made box office history.

The host marked his fourth time as host for the prestigious event by mocking some of the biggest names in the audience. Among those was Robert De Niro and his large age gap with his girlfriend. Jimmy joked that the first time De Niro played in a role alongside Jodie Foster in 1976's film, Taxi Driver. He then said that she is "now 20 years too old to be his girlfriend," taking aim at the 35 year difference between Robert and Tiffany Chen.

Fans were not impressed with Jimmy's monologe. One person wrote: "Society has moved past for the need for jimmy kimmel hosting award shows #Oscars." Another wrote: "@jimmykimmel started with a terrible opening. It’s going to be a long night! #Oscars."

Oscars attendees forced to walk to carpet as protestors shut down traffic

The Academy Awards experienced a traffic jam when protestors shut down the road.

While making their way to the Dolby Theatre, celebrities were forced to get out of their cars and trek on foot to the red carpet. Hundreds of pro-Palestine protestors, who are calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, showed up in large numbers to block the road. They carried Palestinian flags and signs, while shouting "ceasefire now" and "free Palestine."

Some protestors danced in the streets as they played music and chanted a call for action. Many stood in front of cars to block their entry. A Tesla was also damaged after insisting on driving through the protestors' cones and blockades.

Liza Koshy wore a tight red gown to the Academy Awards, paired with matching eight inch heels.

While walking down the red carpet, the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts star took a tumble. She brushed it off with a couple of laughs and blamed it on an imaginary manhole. People rushed to try to help her back to her feet and she said: "That's alright. There was a man hole, y'all saw that?"

Fans were quick to comment on the moment online, with the fall shared around Twitter, formerly X. One user said: "Liza Koshy's stumble on the­ red carpet at the Oscars will always be remembe­red, but the way she owne­d it with confidence and flair was just as memorable­! Her witty response showe­d her cool under pressure­. While many were quick to joke­ about the slip, Liza showed her sass and grace­ through humour."

Billie Eilish and brother Finneas make major political statement

Billie Eilish and brother Finneas made a major political statement and wore pins on the red carpet that called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

The two are nominated for Best Original Song this year for What Was I Made For from the Barbie film and are some of the celebrities who wore red "Artists4Ceasefire" pins on their lapels as a symbol calling for a ceasefire in the Middle East. Other celebrities who wore the political pins were Poor Things actor Ramy Youssef and Eugene Lang.

Ramy spoke to Variety about the meaning of the button. "We’re calling for immediate, permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We’re calling for peace and lasting justice for the people of Palestine," he said.

"It’s a universal message of, 'Let’s stop killing kids. Let’s not be part of more war.' No one has ever looked back at war and thought a bombing campaign was a good idea," the actor continued, "To be surrounded by so many artists who are willing to lend their voices, the list is growing. A lot of people are going to be wearing these pins tonight. There’s a lot of talking heads on the news, this is a space of talking hearts. We’re trying to have this big beam to humanity.”

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio also known as Bad Bunny is celebrating a new milestone and decade of his life at the 96th Academy Awards. The Puerto Rican artist is set to present an award at the Oscars on the day of his birthday.

Bad Bunny threw a pre-birthday bash last night when he performed in Seattle, Washington for the Most Wanted Tour, performing his new songs from his fifth studio album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana, and other hit songs like Me Porto Bonito and Yo Perreo Sola. He was named Spotify's Most Streamed Artist for three years, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

The Academy 'holds a seat' for Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift, who is a member of The Academy, is not confirmed to be attending the Oscars but does have a seat on waiting for her.

An executive producer of the show Molly McNearney extended Taylor an invite to the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. She told IndieWire: "Listen, we all love Taylor. She’s the best cheerleader you could ever possibly have in any audience, whether it’s the NFL or an award show, so if she wants to get on a plane and come to the Oscars, then we’ll hold a seat for her, 100 per cent."

The pop star just performed six sold out shows in Singapore and is putting the Eras Tour on pause until May.

Inside Ryan Gosling's Oscars I'm Just Ken performance

Jimmy Kimmel opened up to Lara Speer about Ryan Gosling's anticipated performance.

Ryan will be performing I Am Ken from the Greta Gerwig film, Barbie. Jimmy revealed that Ryan's performance is a "big production" and hopes that it's good for the show. Apparently, Ryan is taking this performance very seriously and Jimmy thinks Ryan was lying about not knowing that he was going to perform at the Oscars.

Jimmy said: "For a couple of months leading up, he's saying, 'Oh, I haven't been asked to sing.' That's untrue." He continued: "He had to think about it for a while but he came in and looked around at the space, at the theatre and was, 'Okay yeah, I think I will do this.'"
