Jonathan Ross had Oscars viewers divided with his special live show.

The TV presenter hosted the live Academy Awards for ITV from London. He appeared with a panel including actor Richard Armitage, comedian Ben Bailey Smith, actress Fay Ripley and TV presenter Yinka Bokinni. They were on hand to offer live commentary on the latest action from across the pond.

However, many viewers were unimpressed with the programme as Jonathan appeared during the advert breaks on the American show. Taking to X - formerly Twitter - one said: "I want to watch the Oscars from Hollywood. Why am I watching Jonathan Ross and some other people in a studio in London?"

Another added: "I’d rather sit and watch adverts than this utterly embarrassing jonathan ross session." Some adverts played during the show, as a viewer wrote: "I am glad that ITV are putting adverts instead of Jonathan Ross and the guests. I think they saw people complaining about it and decided adverts were a better option."

A fourth quipped: "The jonathan ross coverage is painful." Someone else commented: "I'm not sure why ITV have decided we needed Jonathan Ross reviewing the jokes in the show..." However, some didn't agree as one said: "Jonathan Ross is good introducing the #Oscars."

Another said: "I'm watching the #Oscars #Oscars2024 live on #ITV. The highlights have #JonathanRoss talking with studio guests. Hosted by #JimmyKimmel in #Hollywood." Just before the show even began, Jonathan had viewers fuming due to a delay to the start time. He was forced to fill the five minute setback following reports pro-Palestine protesters gathered outside the ceremony.

Ahead of hosting the show, Jonathan didn't hold back his thoughts on the nominations. The Masked Singer judge said: "Best Picture, I can see why they're all nominated, I think they all deserve a nomination. Some of them, as a viewer and audience member, didn't excite me as much as others, so I have been a little mystified at the praise heaped on Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon, I'm not huge on either of those two. I love Poor Things, American Fiction I loved as well. It felt quite of the moment. Anatomy of a Fall I think is incredible. I suspect it'll go to Oppenheimer."

Explaining why he didn't like the film that stole the show at the recent BAFTA awards, Ross added: "Clearly Oppenheimer, the craftsmanship.. I love the way it looks, I love the way it sounded... it was the script I had a major problem with. It felt meandering and somewhat unfocussed."

He also shared how he had no plan to stay awake. Jonathan said: "If this was a regular gig and we were doing this once a week, I think I would have to change the way my weekends look, but as it's a one-off I'm just going to try and have a restful day, maybe have a mid-afternoon nap and get plenty of coffee on the side!"
