Jimmy Kimmel has hit out at the Oscars for not giving Barbie star Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig a nomination.

The actress along with the huge blockbuster's director Greta Gerwig, were not amongst at this year's Academy Awards. Her co-star, and Ken, Ryan Gosling received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The move sparked huge outcry earlier this year when the nominations were revealed.

Ryan declared "there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie". Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the show on Sunday night by addressing Margot and Greta's snub. He said: "Now Barbie is a feminist icon, thanks to Greta Gerwig, who many believed deserved to nominated for best director tonight."

The audience applauded as Kimmel joked: "Hold on a second. I know you're clapping, but you're the ones who didn't vote for her, by the way. Don't act like you had nothing to do with this." Turning his attention to Margot and Ryan, he said: "If neither of you wins an Oscar tonight, I would like to say you won something much better, the genetic lottery.”

Actor Ryan spoke out on the nominations as he released a statement following outcry from movie fans. He said: "I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.

"But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

"Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film."

Margot's hometown of Queensland, Australia got in on the backlash as Victoria Police issued a public statement, where they joked their officers were investigating her "robbery". The local authority wrote on Facebook : "POLICE INVESTIGATE AS MARGOT ROBBIED: Police are investigating after a former resident of Ramsay Street was allegedly robbed of an Oscar nomination for best actress", attaching snaps of the popular actress. We'd like to take this opportunity to remind all current residents of Ramsay Street and the rest of Victoria, to consider reporting any non-urgent crime, such as theft, via our online reporting tool."
