Klopp puts Sky Sports reporter on the spot after Liverpool denied penalty

Jurgen Klopp expressed his frustration after Liverpool were not awarded a stoppage-time penalty during their enthralling 1-1 draw against Manchester City at Anfield.

Liverpool were incensed after Alexis Mac Allister went down inside the box in the 98th minute. The Argentine appeared to be caught in the chest by Jeremy Doku, who got some of the ball but followed through into Mac Allister as the Reds midfielder went down clutching his upper body.

Michael Oliver waved away appeals and VAR had a closer look at the incident, but the technology agreed with the referee that it was not a penalty kick. Moments later, the final whistle was blown as both teams settled for a point after Mac Allister had earlier cancelled out John Stones' opener.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Klopp was not best pleased at the decision as he put Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davidson firmly on the spot. Klopp said: "It was [a reasonable conversation to have]! Maybe you can ask him, but our opinions aren’t important. Would you have given the penalty in that situation?

"Isn't it [VAR] there for just making the right decision and not thinking about how high the bar is to overturn a decision? Anywhere else on the pitch that is a 100% foul, and it’s a yellow card. He hits the ball, and only because his foot is up here, he kicks him.

"You will find people, like Mike Dean, is he working for Sky? Great appointment by the way but he and others will find something and all the others as well. It’s a penalty for all football people on the planet, if you don’t think so, maybe you’re not a football person."

Meanwhile, Roy Keane issued his assessment of the incident and disagreed with Klopp, claiming that Oliver made the right decision not to give Liverpool a last-minute spot-kick.

Keane said: "I think Klopp makes a good point about how high his foot is, he does get the ball and there’s no force in there at all. I think the officials get the decision right."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher also delivered his verdict on Doku's challenge. He said: "I think he gets Mac Allister but he’s also trying to pull his foot away from him. If that’s given on the pitch, it doesn’t get overturned but when he puts his foot up, he doesn't go right through with it.

"Klopp said anywhere else on the pitch and that’s a foul, I agree with that, but I do think there’s almost an unwritten rule in football that when it’s in the box, it has to be a little bit more."
