Gregg Wallace has announced that his son Sid has shared "his first words" whilst learning to count, with the news coming following years of non-verbal communication.

The TV presenter, 59, and his wife Anne-Marie Sterpini, 37 - who is known as Anna - are parents to Sid, four, together. It was announced in 2022 that their son had been diagnosed with autism, as well as global development delay.

The MasterChef judge has opened up about their life on several occasions, including in an interview earlier this year. Discussing his son, Gregg said in January: "He's non-verbal and in nappies still, but communication is improving."

He's now shared an update with his followers on Instagram, telling them that Sid has begun verbally communicating. He shared footage of his son counting whilst at home and wrote alongside it: "Sid is counting! It's his first words!" The video showed Sid sitting on the floor and counting with the help of a list of numbers in a book. He's seen going through some of the numbers and pointing at them, whilst making the sounds that are associated with each number.

Gregg's wife Anna also shared the footage on her Instagram account on Sunday afternoon. She expressed her pride in the accompanying caption and described the development as the "best" Mother's Day present she could receive.

Anna wrote in the caption of her post: "The best Mother's Day present I could ever have. This little boy has made me the happiest I could ever be. I am so proud of him." She concluded by writing: "This is Sid and his voice." Fans reacted in the comments section with one person writing: "So happy and so proud of him." Someone else wrote: "Aw that's wonderful." A third person said: "Wonderful to hear." Another fan wrote: "Ahhh this is beautiful."

Gregg previously said that communication with Sid included a "lot of eye contact and smiles". He had shared earlier this year that although his son was non-verbal, he has "a lot of character" and the presenter expressed hope that the family would be able to "understand his world" as much as possible.

He further commented that the lack of communication can be "troubling," as they can't always tell what Sid is feeling. He told the Sun at the time that his son can't "tell" the family when he's "unhappy," for example, or when he's "scared". Gregg - who has two older children from a previous relationship - described the situation as "quite nerve-racking" for a parent.
