A woman who suffered life-threatening injuries in a horror crash that killed three of her pals a year ago is back at work, with her mum declaring: “She’s a soldier.”

Sophie Russon needed a 14-hour op for bruising on her brain after their car smashed into trees near a roundabout.

The bank worker spent months in a rehab clinic but mum Anna Certowicz has now said she has returned to her role.

Anna, 42, said: “She’s back part-time. It’s given her a purpose in life again. This time last year we could never have imagined it.”

Sophie, 21, was heading to a club in Newport with four friends when their car crashed in a Cardiff suburb. It took police two days to find the wreckage on March 6. Darcy Ross, 21, and Eve Smith, 20, died along with driver Rafel Jeanne, 24. Sophie and Shane Loughlin, 32, were injured.

Anna says she still worries about her girl. She said: “If Sophie goes anywhere I message asking if she’s arrived. I don’t think she’s come to terms with the trauma but she’s putting on a brave face.”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the Gwent force over how long it took to find the group. Seven officers are being probed over potential misconduct and one is under criminal investigation for allegedly falsifying a witness statement.
