Arsenal players rallied around Aaron Ramsdale during half-time of their win over Brentford, which sent them top of the table.

Ramsdale dropped a clanger on the stroke of half-time in their 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday evening as he deputised for the ineligible David Raya, gifting the Bees an equaliser after Declan Rice had opened the scoring.

After receiving a pass from Gabriel, Ramsdale hesitated his clearance, allowing Yoane Wissa to slide in and block the ball, which bounced into the net. Brentford stood firm throughout the majority of the second-half as they looked to hold out for a vital point, but were breached in the 86th minute.

Ben White's cross was met by Havertz, who powered the ball into the back of the net, sparking delirium across the Emirates. Arsenal held on to secure their eighth successive victory and move to the top of the table ahead of Sunday's blockbuster clash between Liverpool and Manchester City.

Speaking after the game, Havertz detailed what was said at half-time as the Gunners sought to respond following Ramsdale's moment to forget.

He told Sky Sports: "It wasn’t nice especially when you concede so closely to the whistle. But we all spoke with each other then and made sure we rallied around each other because I don’t think we’d deserved to concede but mistakes are part of the game.

"I had a few mistakes that could’ve led to goals so we wanted to turn it around, spoke to each other and showed a good mentality."

Havertz added: "It’s a massive win for us. We were so desperate to get these three points and they’re really big for us, and I think you could see that by our performance in the second half.

"We came in at halftime and we wanted to turn it around, we didn’t play our best in the first half but to win it that way was even better."

Arsenal are now top of the Premier League and sit one point above Liverpool and two ahead of City going into Sunday's blockbuster affair at Anfield. With the Gunners without a Premier League game until March 30 now due to Chelsea's involvement in the FA Cup next weekend, it was vital they ended this period with a win.

"Yeah obviously it’s always nice to have three points in the bag," Havertz continued. "We’ve thought a lot about that in the dressing room before the match but of course we tried to focus on ourselves during the match because we can’t change what the other teams are doing.

"Today was huge for us and we’ll go into the next competition during the week and we’ll look forward to that one."
