Jamie Carragher appeared to mock comments made by Andy Burnham after the mayor of Greater Manchester claimed Manchester United needed public funds to help facilitate the building of a new stadium.

It was announced on Friday that Burnham, alongside Lord Sebastian Coe and Gary Neville, would form part of a task force which will explore the options for a major regeneration of the Old Trafford area. It is understood that new United part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's preference is to build a new stadium, rather than refurbish the club's current home.

The development is the latest positive move which has been overseen by Ratcliffe, who is now in control of sporting operations after purchasing a minority stake in his boyhood club. It's estimated, however, that building a new stadium would cost in the region of £3billion and Ratcliffe has already alluded to the fact that the club could seek to use public funds in order to build a 'Wembley of the north'.

Burnham has now echoed similar sentiments, saying: “What I have got to do as part of the task force in the next five, six months working with Lord Coe and Gary [Neville] and others is give all the supporting information to enable a decision - is it refurbished or is it a new build?

“In either case there will be some requirement for public funds to be involved because of the train station and the big freight depot right behind Old Trafford which is an issue as well and something we have got to look at.”

Burnham's comments got short shrift from Carragher, though, on social media. The former Liverpool defender shared a post of the report with Burnham's comments with a host of laughing emojis, seemingly indicating he disagreed with the mayor's stance in the now deleted tweet.

Although the cost of renovating Old Trafford would be closer to half of the £3bn it would take to construct a new state-of-the-art stadium, Ratcliffe wants to seize the "once-in-a-century opportunity" to implement a game-changing initiative for the north.

He said earlier this week: “The north-west of England has a greater concentration of major football clubs than anywhere else in the world, yet we don’t have a stadium on the scale of Wembley, the Nou Camp or Bernabéu.

“We will not be able to change that on our own, which is why this task force is so important to help us seize this once-in-a-century opportunity.”
