Neil Warnock steps down as Aberdeen's manager after just a month in charge

Neil Warnock has stepped down as Aberdeen's interim manager, the club have announced.

The news was confirmed in a statement on Saturday afternoon shortly after Aberdeen's 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals.

Chairman Dave Cormack revealed that the club's search for a new long-term manager were "at an advanced stage", hence Warnock's exit. He explained: "The Club would like to thank both Neil and Ronnie Jepson for their efforts. With the search for a new manager at an advanced stage, Peter Leven will assume control of all first team matters until the process is concluded."

Warnock, 75, was only at the helm for 33 days in total and had won just one match prior to Saturday's triumph in the cup, which puts the Dons into the final four.

Warnock confirmed the decision to part ways was mutual post-match. He added: "I was honoured to lead Aberdeen for a short period to help Dave and the board get themselves into a position where they could get closer to making a permanent appointment.

"It goes without saying that I had hoped I could've collected a few more league wins along the way, but I am also delighted to have helped the club into the Scottish Cup semi-finals. I hope they can now go on and lift the trophy.

"Ronnie [Jepson] and I can't thank the fans enough for their support while we've been here and we wish the club and the supporters all the very best for the remainder of the season and for the future."

It remains to be seen if Warnock, who was previously had spells with the likes of Sheffield United, QPR, Crystal Palace and Cardiff City, will take another management role.

He joined Huddersfield Town back in February 2023 and successfully guided the Championship strugglers to safety before signing on for the 2023/24 campaign. He left the Terriers in September to allow the club to appoint Darren Moore as their new manager.

Warnock was appointed by Aberdeen on a contract until the end of the season. He leaves the Dons in 10th place in the Scottish Premiership.
