Getting a plaque put on a bench for a loved one is an adorable tribute after they've passed away.

Whether they loved the park and spent lots of time there, or regularly sat on that bench reading, there can be many reasons you'd want to commemorate them in that specific way.

But Brits have been left in stitches after reading the plaque on a couple's memorial bench, with someone jokily saying that they felt sorry for the man in the relationship.

Taking to Reddit 'Casual UK', the person who spotted the bench penned: "I feel kind of sorry for Charles."

On the left-hand side of the bench was a tribute to Joan, who lived 1933-2011, and it read: "Joan loved this park." On the right-hand side was a tribute to Charles, whose nickname was 'Chic', who lived 1931-2017, and it read: "Chic loved Joan."

This is enough to make your eyes well up and envisage what a beautiful life the pair lived together - but some felt a little sorry for Charles.

In the comments, someone wrote: "This is the kind of mordant, unexpected humour I associate with the UK", with another saying: "That's so sad, but beautiful. You just know Chic sat on that bench most days."

Someone responded: "At least they're together now smiling at each other." A Reddit user reassured the original poster: "No need perhaps to feel sorry for him. He loved, and you can't do much more with your life that's truly worthwhile."

Some pointed out that if he'd died first, it would be sad - but since he'd lived six years longer, it was sweet. They shared: "It be quite bad if he'd died first! I think it's a lovely image of how much Chic loved Joan, and how much he wanted everyone to know", and someone said: "Yeah! I think it's supposed to explain why that bench is theirs. Joan loved the park, so she would visit that bench to enjoy the park. Chic loved Joan, and so he would visit the bench because it was Joan's bench."
