Noel Gallagher has called Trent Alexander-Arnold a "simpleton" after he argued that Liverpool's trophies meant more to their fanbase than Manchester City 's.

The two title contenders square off at Anfield on Sunday afternoon with the winner potentially taking a huge stride towards Premier League success. City have won five of the past six league titles with Liverpool the only team to stop them back in 2020.

The Reds have been the only team to come close to City over the Pep Guardiola era, but even they've been blown away in terms of trophies won. Alexander-Arnold has argued that, due to the financial gulf between the teams, the success of Liverpool will have meant more to the fan base.

He said: "We're up against a machine that's built to win - that's the simplest way to describe City and their organisation. Looking back on this era, although they've won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially. "How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we've done it, probably means more to our fans."

Those comments have provoked a response from former Oasis star, Gallagher, who has taken aim at the right-back for his "dim" comments. He said on TalkSport : "If he wasn't such a simpleton then I'd say yeah... First of all he says 'in this era City have probably won more trophies than us' and it's like hang on, we have won more trophies than you, in fact we've won twice as many than you.

"For someone to say that a trophy means more to one set of fans, than another set of fans, is the talk of a simpleton. I tell you this, West Ham winning the Europa Conference League, will have meant as much as the Champions League to us. For him to come out with that, even by footballer's standards he's a bit dim. I don't think he was being clever and all this about him playing mind games - really?"

Jurgen Klopp has backed his player's take in the pre-match build-up but Erling Haaland has chosen to fire back at Alexander-Arnold. The Norwegian claimed the treble in his debut season with City - an achievement that has eluded Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool.

Haaland told Sky Sports : "I've been here one year and I won the Treble and it was quite a nice feeling. I don't think he knows exactly this feeling. So, that's what I felt last season. It was quite nice. If he wants to say that, OK. They can talk as much as they want, or he can talk as much as he wants. I don't know why he does that but I don't mind."
