A man has shared his terror after prising open a "screwed shut" door in his apartment when curiosity got the better of him. When viewing his top-floor studio from the outside one day, the college student noticed how his apartment window wasn't in the corner of the building like he thought it was.

Instead, there was an 'unexplainable space', making him wonder whether there was a 'secret' room connected to his apartment. So, when he returned home, he put two and two together and determined his "screwed shut" back door must have led into another room.

Curious about what was behind this door, he decided to prise it open to find out - expecting it to be a storage space or electrical cupboard. He said on Reddit: "My apartment had a back door that was screwed shut, sealed with tape, and painted over. There was apparently a considerable amount of hidden space behind the sealed door.

"I opened it up and found a narrow unused staircase running the entire height of the building. It had doors to all the units below mine and they all seemed sealed off in the same way mine was. At the basement level, there was an unlocked door leading to the basement, so I went through it.

To his surprise, it opened into a small unfinished basement room stacked with 50 or 60 child-sized chair-desk units used in elementary schools. Freaked out, he added: "I have no idea what was going on with that. There was a door out of that room into what I assume was the rest of the basement, but I couldn't get to it because of all the desks stacked up in the way.

"I went back to my apartment and realized there was no lock on my back door, so I got a bunch of boards and screws and boarded it up as permanently as possible." Commenting on his post, one user said: "This reminds me of Only Murders In The Building! You may find it amusing to watch just because of that little tidbit alone. Sounds like it must have been a townhouse converted."

Another user added: "Look, if I were going to hide something super interesting that I was reasonably sure would only be stumbled upon by mildly curious people, I’d probably make sure there were 50-60 elementary school desks stacked in front of it too. Just saying, this isn’t the attitude that ends you up with genies…"

A third user said: "I used to live in a building that had decided that the entrance should be from the alley instead of the street, then moved appliances in front of the “front doors” which I imagine were locked. I could see part of the door and snooping around outside I found the very overgrown previous entrance. But I never moved my fridge to explore more."
