After Fortnite servers went down for the usual pre-season launch maintenance, Epic has announced an eight-hour delay in getting them back up and running

Epic Games has announced that the Fortnite downtime has been extended by an extra eight hours at least, due to an "unexpected issue" found during maintenance.

Update [10.42pm GMT] : Fortnite downtime for ahead of the Myths and Mortals update was extended earlier today, with a new Chapter 5 Season 2 start time of 10pm GMT / 5pm EST / 2pm PST but this has been pushed back again as Epic delays getting Fortnite back online s second time. Taking to the Twitter Fortnite status account, it updated players with a new Chapter 5 Season 2 preload time of around 9pm EST / 6pm PST and 2am GMT in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"We’re continuing the work to bring Fortnite back online. Players will be able to pre-download an updated version of v29.00 in approximately 5 hours. We’re grateful for your patience and can’t wait for everyone to be able to jump in," Epic said.

Original story [2.32pm GMT] : The Fortnite downtime for Chapter 5 Season 2 kicked off earlier today, and while we expected that players would be able to jump into the game to check out the Myths and Mortals update and the new Lego Fortnite update about now, that sadly won't be the case. Epic Games has confirmed that the Fortnite downtime is set to last for another eight hours at least, saying in a tweet on the @FortniteStatus account "we encountered an unexpected issue during our maintenance and we need to extend downtime at least 8 additional hours".

Epic also said that "the team is working through this as quickly as possible, and we’ll provide another update when we have more info". Keeping in mind that Epic Games said 'eight hours at least' the absolute earliest we can see Fortnite's downtime ending is 10pm GMT / 5pm EST / 2pm PST later today but your best bet is to keep up to date on the Fortnite Status account where Epic games will announce any changes. We'll also update this piece as more info arrives from Epic Games.

What's new in the Fortnite update

This season of Fortnite is set to bring some brand new content to the game, as the Myths and Mortals season kicks into gear. Players will be able to collect almost the entire Greek god pantheon by going through the Battle Pass, with a side helping of Avatar, as Korra is set to arrive as the secret skin later this season.

It's not just the Battle Pass that the Greek gods are invading however as not only are Mount Olympus and The Underworld brand new POI's on the map, but players will be able to battle some of these mythical figures, as well as use some of their powers for themselves. Zeus' Thunderbolt, Icarus' Wings and Hades' iconic SMG are all going to be available this season.

But Battle Royale and Zero Build aren't the only parts of Fortnite getting attention today, as a new Lego Fortnite update is set to introduce Lego Kits to the game. These kits will allow you to recreate some of the most iconic areas in Fortnite, as well as some classic real-life Lego sets, and place them in your world to impress all your Lego friends.
