There is much to love about working from home.

You can cook a nice healthy lunch, brew much tastier coffee than you get from chain store takeaways and work in relative silence or play music of your choice – both of the latter options are preferable to the din of an open-plan office full of chatter.

But when working at a computer desk eight or more hours a day, it’s important for our physical and mental health to have the right furniture such as a decent ergonomic, posture-assisting, office chair.

And even with the right chair and desk set up, you can endure all sorts of aches and pains over an eight-hour working day.

If you spend lengthy periods every day sitting down at a desk, you could be at risk of illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer and heart disease. Sitting down for too long can also increase anxiety and affect your mental health.

So, a much better option for you is to have the right mix of standing and sitting throughout your working day.

Standing for at least 30 minutes at a time while working has many health benefits. It burns more calories and engages more muscles.

You are keeping your legs and core engaged throughout the day and this helps to reduce back pain, improve circulation and burn more calories.

But standing for long periods is not good for your health either – as it puts pressure on your legs, which can cause swelling, varicose veins and haemorrhoids.

So, standing desk is another essential purchase for anyone working from home (and indeed for anyone working in an office).

When it comes to choosing the right standing desk, you should opt for one with a robust build, a large enough desktop area and a sufficient maximum load capacity. And because you want to ideally switch between sitting and standing, you should go for one with a motorised standing desk frame as they can change height at the push of a button.

Think of buying a piece of office furniture like this as an investment. In general, there are standing desks available for every budget.

Some take as little as 15 minutes to assemble; others can take up to an hour.

It took me about 40 minutes to unpack and set up the Maidesite TH2 Pro Plus. This is how I got on…

Maidesite TH2 Pro Plus features

A premium-level product in terms of features and pricing, Maidesite TH2 Pro Plus is an easy-to-operate motorised height-adjustable standing/sitting desk.

It has a sleek design with oval desk legs and feet that look stylish and will look good in almost any home office set-up.

TH2 Pro Plus I tested had a relatively large desktop area (120cm x 60cm, 3ft 11in) that would suit someone who wants to use a widescreen monitor, or two monitors, with a keyboard, mouse or trackpad and a desktop or laptop computer.

The frame of the unit comes in three colour options: grey, black and white. The desktop itself comes in five options: white, wood, bamboo, black and vintage.

Two larger desktop sizes are also available in wood, black and vintage. The white model only comes in two desktop sizes and the bamboo only comes with one size desktop.

TH2 Pro Plus has a maximum load capacity of 125kg (280lbs), which is more than enough for even the most complex work-from-home scenarios.

The dual motor system which raises and lowers your desk is both quiet and powerful. It moves fluidly too, moving up and down at 40mm per second. The desk feels robustly made and durable, and the weight is evenly absorbed between the sturdy legs. There is no wobble, even when the desk is extended to its maximum height.

A responsive touchscreen control panel that screws to the underside of the desk offers a range of functions. You can customise its four presets to your own needs or manually set the height required. Even if the desk is just for yourself, you can input comfortable sitting and standing heights in two of the presets, while the extra two presets are handy if a couple of people are sharing the desk.

The height can be set anywhere between 62cm (24in) and 127cm (50in). This means the desk will be suitable for anyone within the height of 140cm (4ft 7in) and 193cm (6ft 4in).

The anti-collision system kicks in if the sensor detects an obstacle. The motor will then automatically reverse a few centimetres (inches) before any damage is done.

There is a Child Lock to prevent accidental use. And there is a useful wake-up function that you can set to remind you to sit or stand every 30 minutes, one hour or two hours.

The control panel has a USB-C port too, which is convenient for charging phones or other devices while you work.

TH2 Pro Plus is a self-assembly desk that in two boxes – one for the desktop and a heavier but smaller box for everything else. All the tools and parts I needed to build the desk were in the boxes.

The included instruction booklet explained each step, in detail, using a combination of diagrams and text.

Maidesite also offers an array of accessories as optional extras to keep your desktop tidy – such as a monitor arm – and the firm also sells ergonomic office chairs.

The company says that the motor should last for 20,000 ascend-descend movements which would give it a life of about 10 years. There is a guarantee of five years, incidentally.

Maidesite TH2 Pro Plus verdict

The 120cm x 60cm Maidesite TH2 Pro Plus is a versatile piece of office furniture that is everything I need in standing/sitting desk.

It makes alternating between standing and sitting during my working day an easy task. You feel less tired and experience noticeably less discomfort throughout the working day.

I like this most compact size because it’s still big and strong enough to hold all my kit but when I’m not working, at weekends for example, I can tuck the desk away in the corner as it takes up so little room.

And the sleek design means it can be set up in any room of the house and it will slot in nicely. It’s an easy desk to recommend.
