Sampling the culinary delights of Paris, and cruising along Amsterdam's famous canals, are some of the top travel experiences Brits are most eager to share – with their mums, according to a study.

Other overseas adventures adults are keen to share with the woman who raised them include hitting a spa in Budapest, taking in the street art in Lisbon, and whale-watching in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik.

It comes as a survey of 2,000 holidaymakers found that 69% would happily holiday with their mothers – with almost half (48%) eager to start a new tradition of “mum-ventures”.

And with 22% feeling as though they don't spend enough quality time with the leading lady in their life, almost one in three would even ditch holidays with their friends, to travel with their mum instead.

Seven in 10 (71%) would welcome the chance to spend more time with their mum, while 59% would view a joint vacation as an opportunity to create lasting memories. And 48% simply want to show their appreciation for all she has done for them.

The research was commissioned by London Luton Airport, which is offering limited fast-track security and complimentary lounge passes for those jetting away with a mother figure this weekend.

Clare Armstrong, head of guest experience at the airport, said: “It's heart-warming to see 55% of holidaymakers want to go on adventures with their mum, whether it's a getaway abroad or a cherished moment closer to home.

“We’re thrilled to offer travellers flying with their mums this weekend some exclusive extras to get their trip off to the best possible start, as part of our commitment to providing a simple and friendly passenger experience.”

The research also found 38% of those polled want to make more effort with their mum – from showing gratitude for her support (52%), to trying to call her more often (25%).

And 61% would go on a holiday with their mother to strengthen their bond, while 43% would use a trip together to reignite their relationship. In fact, 57% wish they could surprise their mum with a getaway this Mothering Sunday.

However, 19% of those polled, via OnePoll.com, claimed they put more effort into celebrating the occasion over other moments – such as Christmas, birthdays, or anniversaries.

When it comes to mum-ventures, 66% of travellers crave the excitement of city breaks, while 59% long for the relaxation of a beach getaway, and 50% love the indulgence of a luxury vacation.
