Steve Lawrence died at the age of 88 according to a press release sent out Thursday.

The singer is known for his marriage to Eydie Gorme and his songs like Go Away Little Girl. He died after "complications due to Alzheimer's disease," which the star publicly admitted he suffered from in 2019.

Steve's son David released a statement about his father's death. "My dad was an inspiration to so many people," he wrote.

"But, to me, he was just this charming, handsome, hysterically funny guy who sang a lot," David added, "Sometimes alone and sometimes with his insanely talented wife."

He finished: "I am so lucky to have had him as a father and so proud to be his son. My hope is that his contributions to the entertainment industry will be remembered for many years to come."

Steve is survived by his son, daughter-in-law Faye, granddaughter Mabel, and brother, Bernie. His beloved wife, Eydie, died in 2013 from an undisclosed illness.

Steve and his wife had a music group, Steve and Eydie, and the two married in 1957. Together the two won two Emmys and a Grammy for their work together.

When Eydie died, Steve released a statement that read: "Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing.

"While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time."

The couple shared two children, David and Michael. David followed in his parents' footsteps as a composer for productions such as Disney's High School Musical.

Michael tragically passed away in 1986 at the age of 23 from an undiagnosed heart condition. Family friend Frank Sinatra sent his private plane to the couple for them to use when he heard of their son's passing.

Outside of music, Steve was a fan favourite on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He also appeared with Fran Drescher as her father on the hit sitcom The Nanny. He also appeared in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers and the film's sequel in 1998.

Steve also appeared on The Carol Burnett Show and hosted The Steve Lawrence show for 13 weeks in 1965. It was the last variety show to air in black and white.

Fans on social media shared their sadness about the crooner's passing. "Sad news - Steve Lawrence was a wonderful singer (as was Eydie Gorme) - a vital part of a golden era of pop singing," one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another added: "He was a true legend in the entertainment industry, with his velvety voice and charismatic stage presence, he captivated audiences for decades, and he will be missed."
