A dad challenged his son to take them away on holiday for less than £100.

Dean Playford, 35, wanted to try something new for his son’s upcoming birthday and so tasked the teen with choosing a day trip destination on a £100 budget. Resourceful Dylan managed to find a great getaway deal to visit Prague, Czech Republic, and the plane fanatic even got to sit in the cockpit along the way.

The dad, from Wealden District, East Sussex, UK, said: "With the cost of travel and holidays being so much, we thought it would be fun to set him a challenge for his 13th birthday. I gave him a £100 budget, and the rules of the trip were, we could fly anywhere, but we have to fly there and back in one day."

The rules were simple: the trip had to be in Europe, for one day and of course, had to be under £100 including a return ticket. Dylan took on the challenge with open arms and managed to find the perfect day-long getaway, all by himself, and suggested it to his dad.

The destination was Prague for the low cost of a £92 return - not a bad deal the then 12-year-old managed to find. With help from his dad’s card, the holiday was booked and after an early 7am flight, they were exploring the famous city.

According to Dylan the highlight of the trip was the airport. The plane fanatic even sat on a runway platform and took pictures of landing aircraft. Dylan was even lucky enough to sit in the cockpit after landing in Prague and learn about all things flying from the generous pilots.

Dean had a fantastic time with his son and he was proud of how much time Dylan put into the challenge to make it a reality. He said: “He did loads of research on where we could go within the price limit! He even sent me a PowerPoint with a top-five list.

“He’s very mature for his age and we’d sat together looking at flights a lot before so he knows how the process works. He loved it. I mentioned that he wanted to be a pilot when we landed and they were happy to have him in the cockpit. He looked quite overwhelmed by the experience.

“Prague was a beautiful city. There were lots of things to see in a small area which made it great for a quick visit. We did a few hours sightseeing around the city and grabbed some lunch, took to the bridge and castle and main square. We then headed back to the airport so Dylan could do some plane spotting.

“They had a great platform by the runway for plane spotting, which he loved. Dylan loves planes and different airlines and wants to be a pilot. The highlight was an RAF plane landing from Germany just as the sun was setting.

“I hope it encourages more people to travel with their children! Travel can be so expensive and lavish holidays are seen everywhere across social media. It’s great to show these things are possible on a budget. The plan is to make it a regular trip to continue making father/son memories and exploring new places together."
