A family is searching for a snake in their house after shed skin was found in the kitchen and they have no idea where it is.

Katherine Thornton, from Guisborough, received a shocking phone call from her 16-year-old daughter to tell her that they had a snake in the house last Monday.

While Katherine was taking her cats to the vet, her daughter found freshly shed snake skin in their kitchen. She rang her mum straight away who couldn’t believe it.

Katherine said: “I thought she was joking. I was laughing on the phone saying ‘behave, don't be daft’ and then when I saw the snake skin when I got back I thought it looked quite big. It doesn't look like a small one.

“When she found it she just started laughing and she said ‘it’s just our luck’. I had a plumber come in the house yesterday to do some work for me and he told me that his wife breeds snakes and she’s got 400 in her garage. He said looking at that snake skin it looks like a really big snake. He was suggesting a boa. I wouldn't say I'm really scared. I’m just scared for my animals.”

Katherine, who has three cats and one kitten, asked her daughter to send a photo of the snake skin and advised her to check if it was crispy or soft. Her daughter said it was fresh and soft so the pair knew the snake had gotten into their house not long ago, reported TeessideLive.

The teenage girl used to have a pet snake two years ago and she thought it might have been some of her snake’s old skin but then she realised the skin was fresh so it couldn’t be. Her old pet snake had to be sold “because it became really aggressive”.

Katherine posted a photo of the new snake skin in the Guisborough News and Views Facebook group to see if anyone in the area had lost their snake. She captioned the post: “Found this freshly shed skin in my kitchen has anyone lost a snake, near the council offices, on Woodhouse Road just in case I find it and I can return it swiftly!”

The post has received more than 100 comments and according to Katherine, some people said it “could be an adder from the hills” and someone else commented that a snake called Bruce has gone missing in the area.

Katherine added: “Absolutely loads of people have commented saying ‘move out of the house’. Believe me, if I had somewhere to go I’d be gone but unfortunately, I’m going to have to try and grin and bear it and see if we can find it in the meantime.”

The mother-and-daughter will “have to get everything out and have a good look” in their house to try to find the missing snake. They put talc down in the kitchen last night to try to track the snake but it didn’t work and they have “managed to get the clickboards out and have a look under there”

Katherine’s fridge is an “enclosed unit” and she has a “ feeling that's where it might be with the fridge giving out heat”. Also, she is keeping her kitten upstairs in case the snake comes out and tries to “attack her”.
