Coronation Street's Sue Cleaver is quitting the cobbles for a surprising new career change.

The actress, 60, has played Eileen Grimshaw for 24 years on the soap, but now she's taking time off after bagging her "dream role". Telling Lorraine Kelly she's about to star as Mother Superior in the stage production of the smash hit show, Sister Act: The Musical, Sue admitted the role has always been close to her heart.

Explaining it's been more than 30-years since she's been on stage, the actress said theatre has always been her first love, adding: "A chance to take on a role like this feels like heaven.”

However, Corrie fans viewers don't have to worry about saying goodbye to Eileen as Sue confirmed she'll be back filming the soap in a few months. Speaking about her hiatus, she said: "I have a few months grace to do this job then I'll be back in there."

The news delighted Lorraine, who said she loved the "old guard" on the soap, including Eileen, as she urged: "We need more from you." Sue admitted: "That would be very nice. I think George and Eileen should have a big old fashioned Corrie wedding." She also told Lorraine this was "her decade" as she said once she hit 60 she wanted to "have fun", sharing: "I feel very much on a journey."

The I'm A Celebrity star has been dubbed unrecognisable in recent months after she changed her lifestyle to improve her health and lose weight. The soap star has spoken openly about her weight loss journey over the years and has dropped an impressive three stone.

She explained in an interview with Woman Magazine that after getting through Dry January last year, she decided to give up alcohol all together. Speaking about her time in I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, she said: "I lost 18lb. I'd already lost a stone and a half that year, because I gave up booze.

"I did Dry January and then I decided to carry on. I know it sounds ridiculous at my age, but I never really thought about how many calories I was consuming when I was having a glass of red wine while cooking dinner and then a couple more while eating it. If you're doing that four or five nights a week, that's a lot of calories."

Fans were delighted to see Sue on the Lorraine show today as many commented on how well she looked. On X, formerly Twitter, one person wrote: "Sue Cleaver looking amazing. I did not recognise her." While another agreed, gushing: "Sue Cleaver looks incredible!"

The actress will appear in Sister Act: The Musical from 14 March 2024, starting in Brighton, and visiting Manchester, Cork, Belfast, Glasgow and York, before ending in Birmingham in May 2024. After bagging the gig, Sue said in a statement: ‘‘I’m thrilled to be stepping into the habit and joining the incredible company of Sister Act on tour."
