Coronation Street fans will be seeing a familiar face in upcoming scenes as a Desperate Housewives star will be joining the cobbles.

In upcoming episodes, childhood sweethearts Leanne Battersby and Nick Tilsley will find their relationship tested when Leanne finds herself captivated by the leader of a support group called The Institute, which has the potential to leave their romance on the rocks.

In the upcoming episodes, the couple deal with Simon Barlow's court proceedings after he crashed a car while travelling with Nick's young son, Sam Blakeman, while over the limit. Simon tells Nick and Leanne, who is his legal mother, that he’s prepared for whatever punishment the magistrate throws at him as he deserves it while Sam agrees to write a character reference for Simon.

Later in the week, as Leanne and Simon get ready to leave for court, Nick claims he's far too busy to go with them. The admission leaves Simon disappointed and Leanne furious at her partner. Following the court proceedings, Leanne decides to take Simon to the Chariot Square Hotel as there's a The Institute seminar, which is a support group.

After learning that there's a wedding fair at the same time, Nick reluctantly agrees to accompany Leanne. However, it's not long until a member of The Institute, Rowan, charms Leanne and gives her the benefit of his advice. Leanne is taken aback, especially when Rowan encourages her to share her innermost thoughts and feelings. Following their interaction, Rowan flashes her a smile and Leanne finds herself blushing.

Rowan will be played by actor Emrhys Cooper, who already has an impressive TV resume. The actor, 39, has appeared in Mamma Mia!, Desperate Housewives as Richard and even starred in Sugababes' hit 2005 single Push the Button music video.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Emrhys penned: "The cat is out of the bag. Today is a good day, I am bursting with pride, and so excited to announce that I have joined the cast of the iconic British TV series @coronationstreet. Playing the character of Rowan Cunliffe. Lots of really great storylines in the pipe line. Corrie is the longest running soap opera in the world!

"For well over half a century, Coronation Street has held a mirror to the British public through good times, and bad, so many incredible actors have walked the legendary cobblestones streets and now I’m pinching myself that I will be one of them. I’m also so happy that my mother will be able to watch the show from her nursing home. Thanks again to all the amazing people involved in the production. They have welcomed me with open arms and open hearts. Let’s do this! I first appear on the 15th March @itv - USA @britbox @hulu #CoronationStreet #RowanCunliffe."

To which Leanne star Jane Danson replied: "So excited for everyone to see your character - it’s going to be VERY interesting - welcome to the cobbles love xxx" while Toyah Battersby star Georgia Taylor added: "You’re such a delight to have around, darling xx."
