Jeremy Clarkson has revealed he had a "s*** load" of beers at the Bahrain Grand Prix, where he spoke to Sky Sports' Martin Brundle on his grid walk.

Clarkson's interview went viral on social media, with the former Top Gear presenter among a host of celebrities Brundle interviewed ahead of the first Formula 1 race of the season, including former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

When asked for his thoughts on the new season by Brundle, Clarkson replied: "I spent all of today looking at the lap times from last year to this year, and wondering - what have they all been doing over the winter?

"The gaps, by and large, are the same. McLaren have gotten a lot better, they are much a closer to Max. It's a strange thing to go from one year to the next, and for so little to have changed."

Clarkson was also asked who he thought would win the Grand Prix and jokingly said Adrian Newy, who is Red Bull Racing's chief technical officer and widely considered to be the greatest designer in F1 history.

Red Bull did go on to dominate the race, with Max Verstappen winning and his teammate Sergio Perez finishing second. And Clarkson has since revealed he had a "s*** load" of beers during his timein Bahrain.

After sharing a video of him waving the chequered flag at the Grand Prix on Instagram, Clarkson responded to a fan who asked him how many beers he had drunk. "A s*** load," was Clarkson's reply.

Reflecting on the race, Mercedes chief Toto Wolff admitted: "Max was in a different galaxy. We need to look at ourselves, why we lost so much performance on the harder tyre. We got the cooling level wrong and therefore you need to lift and coast, you lose performance on the tyre and it was a bit of a vicious circle.

"As the race unfolded we had to lift and coast more to manage the temperatures on the power unit. We closed it up too much, that was the main issue. Then we didn't have the pace, weirdly. It's weird, because we had some pace in the car, and on the hard tyre we didn't.

"I think there's many mistakes we've done, but at the end we're learning, we have a brand-new car. We've seen the glimpses of performance but couldn't materialise any of that today, so I'm really keen to look at the data and see what we can do in Saudi."
