Boston Rob explains why he took that huge Deal or No Deal Island gamble to'disappoint naysayers'

Deal Or No Deal Island star Boston Rob has explained why he made the huge gamble on the NBC show, which ultimately paid off and kept him immune from being voted off.

In the second episode of the competition, a challenge saw the players coupled up where one player climbed a tree to grab arrows and the other player fired arrows to try and hit targets attached to briefcases with money inside. Initially viewers watched as Rob, who's real name Robert Carlo Mariano, and pal Aron Barbell linked up to compete together, but watched as Aron was only able to bring back three arrows giving them just three chances to win.

Deciding against playing it safe, Rob chose to aim for the highest value case containing $1.5 million, rather than aim for any of the easier and lower targets that could have stopped them coming in last and being eliminated. Yet Rob put his and Aron's future on the line as he missed the high value case with his first two arrows, leaving everything hanging on his aim with his final arrow.

Viewers at home and the other contestants watched as Rob hit the target, securing his and Aron's immunity and allowing them to put fellow contestant Kim Mattina to face the Banker. She then chose Jamil Sipes to be eliminated.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he explained: "I knew I needed it a hundred percent. I need it or I'm getting thrown in there. So there was no question, there was no decision. I have to go big, or I'm going home." He continued as he explained how he 'loves pressure', and that "if the opportunity's there, I want it to be on me whether I get there or not".

Describing the reaction from fellow players as his huge risk paid off, he said they gave "fake enthusiasm" as he remarked: "Nothing excites me more than being underestimated and disappointing the naysayers. I'm in my element."

In previous episodes Rob had revealed to camera that he would be one others hated as he told the show: "If these people are smart, they'll get rid of me right away. But they won't, they never do. I'm a villain. This is a completely new experience. We have no idea what's gonna happen. I want to control the game. I haven't figured it out yet, but I will."

In another moment, Rob told others that he didn't want to get close to other teammates: "I hate this part of these games where everybody shares, because I know its all nonsense. I don't want to give away any unnecessary information if I don't have to."
