At least 12 people, believed to be innocent bystanders, were injured in what police suspect was a pre-planned attack, WTVA reported. Deputies arrived to the scene at around 1am to find a woman’s body and up to 12 people with wounds ranging from minor to serious, including one individual who had been shot in the face. The dead female is believed to be from Columbus, Mississippi.

An investigation has been launched into how an armed person entered the venue with reports security guards had been on hand and checked people for weapons. "Several hundred" people were believed to be inside the building at the time.

The incident has triggered a dire warning from police, urging people to simply avoid such large gathering . Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott told WTVA-TV: “I think you’re taking a chance on your life right now if you go to these large events. Right now, law enforcement’s saying it’s not a good thing to do. It’s just the kind of society we’re living in. We’re seeing too many cases of gun violence going on, and this just seems to be a trend."

Scott told CNN. “About 90 per cent of the partygoers were from other counties. What we do know is that a party was advertised and all these individuals came from other counties into our county. The suspected gunman reportedly fled the scene and ran across a parking lot and a four-lane highway before vanishing into woodland.

Scott added that the club’s security cameras were not working that night. No arrests had been made as of Sunday evening as the investigation continued.
