A young woman was slated as 'the worst friend' ever after ridiculing her longtime friend's newborn baby's name. The little girl's 'beautiful' name resembles one of Shakespeare's most famous characters in sound - but there are fears that its unorthodox spelling could 'ruin' the child's life.

A Reddit user, called Addie, said: "So I, 21, have been friends with Loreen, 22, for 17 years now and we’re really close. She recently gave birth to her daughter and her and her husband recently told us the name. They decided to name their daughter Ghiuliyette (pronounced Juliet) and her middle name is Mahriya. I thought the spelling was a joke, until she told me they are serious." Addie was nothing but direct in her response.

She carried on: "I told her, that with that spelling of a simple but beautiful name is just going to ruin that little girl's life. She got mad and told me to stop "ruining“ her mood and that I’m being mean. I’m completely honest. The spelling is just bad. Nothing else can explain it. Why ruin such a beautiful name by including letters that don’t belong there?"

Loreen and her husband were unimpressed by Addie's reasoning and her friendship credentials were brought into question. The post continued: "I texted her yesterday and told her that the little girl will try to change her name or at least go by her middle name since it’s normal. She told me to stop texting her, that I’m a bad friend and that I’m being the a*****e for making fun of the name. I don’t think I am."

Addie, who is meant to be Ghiuliyette's godmother, was even told she would never see the child again thanks to her reaction. She wrote: "When I told her that the spelling is just bad, she went crazy. She told me that I’m the worst friend ever and that I would never be able to see her daughter again.

"After that, her husband sent me an email, telling me to stop being so disrespectful. He thinks the spelling is cute and it just makes her unique. Unique-yes. But that’s just going to make that little girl suffer and she will probably be bullied for that spelling."

Addie has since texted Loreen an apology for "going after the name more than once," but is urging her friend to consider her side of the argument. She even sent her screenshots of the post's comments so she could see what people thought of the spelling.

The Reddit consensus was fairly unanimous: the baby's unusual spelling is likely to cause her problems in the future. One high school teacher wrote: "I'll tell you up front that you're right. Kids with f****d up spellings of their names are miserable about 3/4 of the time." Another claimed: "Long term studies have absolutely proved that kids with novelty names/name spelling are way worse at spelling all their lives because they get second guessed all the time."

Someone else said: "Names are the first thing most kids learn to spell, using “uncommon” spellings that go against basic spelling rules is a recipe for disaster," as one person warned she will be called "Ghoul-iet before middle school," and another added: "Personally my first thought was Guillotine... poor girl."
