Kylie 'saves the Brits' as fans compare hosts to Sam Fox and Mick Fleetwood

Kylie Minogue and Clara Amfo were hits with Brit Awards viewers on Saturday night, but not much else impressed those tuned into ITV to watch the star-studded celebration of music.

Clara, Maya Jama and Roman Kemp were the trio on hand to present the show at The O2 Arena in London, with RAYE the big winner on the night, picking up six awards and winning in every category she was nominated in except for one.

But while it was a great night for Escapism singer RAYE, this year's Brit Awards have been labelled "crash crash TV" and "one of the worst EVER" - with only Australian songstress Kylie managing to salvage something as she closed the show after taking home the global icon gong.

"Kylie saved the Brits #thebritawards," one declared on Twitter (X) as the Padam Padam hitmaker belted out some of her biggest hits at the end of the night. Another savage viewer added: "I remember when the BRITS used to be must watch TV. An absolute pile of sh*** this year that was only saved by Kylie reminding everyone how it should be done."

Presenter Roman took some flack from Brits fans as hosted the show alongside Clara and Maya, mainly thanks to making a cheeky joke about Green Day. The American pop punk band were at The O2 Arena to hand out the gong for Best British Group, but before they walked onto the stage, Roman quipped: "To present our next award for British group are two genuine rock gods. They have sold over 75 million records and released 14 albums - they are very much the American Busted. Please welcome from Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong and Tre Cool."

Those watching at home were not happy about this comment and shared their thoughts on social media. One person said: "I think Green Day being called "the American Busted" might be the most insulting thing I've ever heard. Ever. #BritAwards." Another asked: "Did he just call Green Day the American Busted #BritAwards."

Having a trio of hosts prompted many Brits viewers to recall Mick Fleetwood and Sam Fox's disastrous stint hosting the awards back in 1989 - with many questioning why Radio 1 DJ and music expert Clara wasn't entrusted to front the show solo. "This year’s #BRITs makes the Mick Fleetwood/Sam Fox performance worthy of BAFTA Lifetime Achievement award," one viewer joked on Twitter on Saturday night.

"When you see Sam Fox, Mick Fleetwood and #BritAwards all trending at the same time you just know that it's car crash TV," another observed, as a third argued: "Clara Amfo should have hosted this alone. Someone who can set the tone. She’s so natural and genuinely a music fan. That connection with Raye and other artists is why she’s one of the best in the biz. Have always been baffled as to why we don’t see her front things more. #BRITs."

The love for Clara didn't stop there, with one fan of the star declaring: "Clara Amfo has held this Brits together. She should host every year. #BritAwards." Clara as a solo host next year was a popular suggestion, with another adding: "Let’s have one host next year. Clara Amfo could do this alone. #brits #BritAwards."

It wasn't just the presenters and stars getting some flack on social media, the subded crowd inside The O2 Arena got called out too. "The Brits audience is a tough crowd," one mused on Twitter on Saturday night, with another joking: "Can Madonna come on and fall again or something to lighten the mood because this crowd is dead #BRITs #BritAwards." A third asked: "Why is the crowd so deaaddddddd #BRITs."

While the Brits Awards 2024 certainly had a few duff moments, award-winner RAYE had a night to remember for all the right reasons. The former Brit school pupil was the star of the night, winning six awards and only missing out on one she was nominated for. The artist was so happy that she cried when she won Album of the Year for My 21st Century Blues, with her grandma Agatha by her side.

"You just don't understand what this means to me," she said tearfully as she put her arm around her grandma. "My middle name is Agatha and this is Agatha Dawson. I'm so proud of this album. I'm in love with music. All I ever wanted to be is an artist and now I'm an artist with an album of the year!"

"I’m so happy to see Raye clearing up at the Brits. She deserves it so much. A massive up yours to the people that didn’t believe in her #TheBrits #BRITs #BritAwards," one happy fan wrote on Twitter as the star won award after award, with another delighted viewer adding: "raye deserves allll the love ever. so proud and happy for her."
