An environmental chemist has serendipitously bagged $100,000 (£79,255) in an annual New Year's Millionaire Raffle for the second consecutive time after winning the jackpot 12 years prior.

Nathan Dean's luck has baffled his wife who initially thought he was pulling her leg. “It took a bit to convince my wife I wasn’t messing with her,” he told lottery officials. Nathan claimed victory on January 8 after lotto officials announced he had just become richer.

The STEM worker said his wife was in utter disbelief, telling him "there's no way you've won it again!" The lucky man was reportedly one of seven winners who were able to claim the second-tier rewards. Nathan first played the numbers in 2012 when the jackpot was $25,000(£19,813)

He recalled checking his numbers while waiting at a stop sign in his car and fondly remember being in disbelief behind the wheel as he realised he was taking home a lump sum of money. “I couldn’t believe it,” he told lottery officials 12 years ago. Nathan, from Virginia, US, has reportedly decided to sit on the cash and contemplate his next move.

An individual seldom bags the lotto jackpot once—let alone twice in a row—but it happens more often than one would expect. Last Month, lucky lotto winner Wayne Murray from New York City became a millionaire for the second time, snagging a handsome $10million(£7,924,400) cash prize.

His first stroke of luck hit in August 2022 while he played the Black Titanium game, which he bought from H&A Gas & Convenience in Brooklyn. Last December brought more good fortune as it was announced he'd won the jackpot again at the same gas station where he bought the first ticket.

The winner said he'd prefer to enjoy his good fortune privately, but Hassan Nabil who was the gas station clerk who sold the winning ticket, couldn't help but tell anyone who would listen. “He’s a super regular guy here. He’s very friendly with the locals and very generous with his time," Nabil said.

"He could have moved out of the neighbourhood after winning the first time, but he stood his ground. Money changes a lot of people, but he doesn’t show off or anything. He keeps it real, keeps it honest.”

“It’s a game for him, so he just keeps playing,” Nabil added. “If you win, you just want to win more.” Wayne requested his cash up front instead of the payment-plan option, raking in more than $6million after taxes. Given that he claimed almost the same amount the first time, Wayne can now call himself a multi-millionaire.
