Vera star Brenda Blethyn details future of popular show after awards show snub
Vera icon Brenda Blethyn updated her curious fans on the future of the popular ITV crime drama series.
The actress, who is best known for playing Vera Stanhope since the show first aired in 2011, was nominated for Best Drama Performance at the Royal Television Society North East and the Borders awards over the weekend but left empty-handed. The programme was also nominated for Best Drama.
The 13th season of the series aired between January 7 and 21, bringing in a whopping 6.66 million viewers but it wasn't enough to win any awards. After the recent series ended, fans have been wondering about the future of the long-running series. At the event, she announced the writer of the book is working on a brand new novel.
She also recently took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to answer a fan who asked: "When will the filming of Vera begin, please? Can't wait to see you all in and around North Tyneside. Brilliant programme". Brenda answered: "End [of] April." Just last month, she said she wasn't sure about the possibility of another series.
Asked about the future of the series and if she'll be back for another stint, she gave a six-word answer: "At the moment there's nothing planned." The DCI Vera Stanhope actress added: "But that’s not to say they’re not talking about it. There might be a winding up. I don’t know. Ann Cleeves is also writing her 11th Vera book. So, there’s also that to consider. But a whole series? I think not. We’ll see."
Vera's Brenda Blethyn admits 'avoiding fans' to not ‘jeopardise’ filming of showBrenda also explained she would have never returned to the show if David Leon, who plays DS Joe Ashworth, hadn't agreed to come back. "After we filmed The Rising Tide at the end of 2022 I didn’t want to do any more without Kenny Doughty, who had decided to leave. But I said, ‘I’ll think about it if you can see if David Leon is available to return as Joe Ashworth,'" she added.
"And so they did and here I am. I was broken-hearted when David left after Series Four and equally overjoyed when I heard he was coming back as the relationship between Vera and Joe worked so well. They have all of that early history together. I wouldn’t have continued if David had not agreed to come back. I just didn’t want to start another board game with somebody else when I know I’m not going to do many more. And who would want to do it anyway?"
