World Book Day is fast approaching, March 7, and while for youngsters it poses the opportunity to dress up as their favourite characters for those of us who are a little older it can be the opportunity to spend a little time curled up with a good book. Many years ago reading a book involved paper and ink but in 2024 there are so many different ways to read.

One popular way to read, especially for those of us who have limited space at home, is with an e-reader. While Kindles definitely dominate the market they're not the only e-readers available.

Here at the Mirror we've rounded up some of the best e-readers of 2024.

Kindle

World Book Day: Best e-readers of 2024 for the bookworm in your lifeThe Kindle can store thousands of different books (Amazon)

The classic Kindle is the cheapest model from Amazon but it's also the cheapest e-reader we've found. As a result, it's also the most basic. It has four LEDs lighting it up, a six inch screen without any glare so you can read in the sunshine and it has a resolution of 300ppi - which is what you will find in every Kindle model.

The only storage option is 16GB, however it's estimated that a Kindle of this size can hold approximately 7,000 to 8,000 books. Available in black or denim, with Wi-Fi accessibility and you can also listen to Audible books via Bluetooth.

The Nia is the most budget friendly option of the Kobo e-reader family and while it is close to £100, this is fairly reasonable for this type of product. It can carry 6,000 e-books with its 8GB battery and a single 2 hour charge will provide weeks of reading time.

It has wi-fi connectivity, a built-in, adjustable ComfortLight so you can read comfortably any time of day and unlike Kindle you can link it up to Libby and enjoy offerings from your local library.

Kobo Clara 2E

The Clara 2E is made from sustainable materials, including 85% recycled plastic, but still looks like you'd expect an e-reader to. It has Bluetooth which allows you to stream Kobo Audiobooks but there's not a built in speaker so this has to be done via headphones or external speakers.

It's completely glare-free - something you can typically expect from an e-reader - and has a ComfortLight PRO screen which is a low blue light option which allows for less eye strain. At 16GB it's said to hold up to 12,000 ebooks. As it's Kobo you should be able to link up your Libby app for free reads.

The Kindle Paperwhite is a step up from the previous model and costs £65 more. Like the Kindle it has 16GB of storage, weeks of battery life and the option to listen to Audible. Its screen is glare-free but stands out for having almost an extra inch of reading space and 17 LEDs lighting it up rather than just four. It has adjustable warm light so you can alter it to suit your eyes depending on the time and it comes with a flush-front design.

Perhaps the most exciting detail is that it's waterproof (IPX8) so you don't have to worry about any bath time or poolside reading. It comes in three colours: Black, Denim and Agave Green. This is the most popular Kindle model for the value for money.

Kindle Oasis

World Book Day: Best e-readers of 2024 for the bookworm in your lifeThe Kindle Oasis is one of the more luxurious models (Amazon)

For a long time the Kindle Oasis was the most high end Kindle model, before the Scribe hit the market. It was bigger than all of the other models with a 7" but it also has a panel to the side with page-turn buttons to make reading easier.

Unlike all other models there is the option of an 8GB model or a 32GB, with 16GB not being an option. There's a jump to 25 LEDs for the screen lighting which is over 6 times what we see with the standard Kindle. It has auto-adjusting light sensors, adjustable warm light and perhaps most excitingly it also offers auto-rotating page orientation. It comes in either Graphite or Gold and is the only Kindle model to offer free mobile connectivity.

Kindle Scribe

World Book Day: Best e-readers of 2024 for the bookworm in your lifeThe Scribe is the most expensive Kindle model (Amazon)

The Kindle Scribe is the latest model of Kindle to be released and this one has a 10.2inch display making it by far the biggest Kindle they have. There are three different options for storage: 16GB, 32GB or 64GB.

There are 35 LEDs on this model and as the name suggests, the ability to actually write on your kindle with this one. It comes with a battery free pen that you can use to jot notes on your Kindle books which could be handy for studying but also is a popular thing that has been viewed on 'booktok' and 'bookstagram' with readers jotting down initial reactions in addition to highlighting passages they enjoy.

It has the standard features seen across all models such as long battery life, audible compatibility and 300ppi resolution. It has auto-adjusting lights, adjustable warm light, a flush-front design and auto rotating page orientation but it is not Waterproof and doesn't have the buttons seen in the Oasis.
