Mauricio Pochettino admits he "knows his place" at Chelsea when quizzed on how much influence he can have on the future of Conor Gallagher.

The sometime Blues skipper is heavily linked with an exit as his contract winds down at Stamford Bridge. Gallagher, one of the club's academy graduates, has donned the armband regularly this term and continues to come up with big goals, but could yet be let go.

Chelsea's activity in the transfer market has raised eyebrows since their American owners have come in. Not only have they spent huge sums but they've allowed the likes of Mason Mount to depart and Pochettino appeared to suggest his influence over player in and outs is limited.

He said: “I am the coach, that needs to be my place.” Pressed on the situation regarding Gallagher he added: “I cannot be involved in this. It's only between the club and Conor that can make the deal.” The Argentine also claimed: “I know my place.”

That is despite the former Tottenham boss suggesting earlier in the season that he needed to be more involved in the club's recruitment. Chelsea's signings since Todd Boehly came in appear to have been done with little strategy in place as the squad still has gaps that need filling.

Pochettino's willingness to accept a role as a coach, rather than a manager, appears to be in stark contrast to the frustration he showed at Tottenham. Whilst in north London his influence over signings was limited as chairman Daniel Levy had a huge says over the ins and outs.

Many suggested that a lack of activity in the market meant that Tottenham missed out on the chance to end their silverware wait as Pochettino unearthed an impressive young squad. In the summer of 2019 his frustration became clear when he suggested the north Londoners needed to change his job title.

He said: "Maybe the club need to change my title description, because my job now is to coach the team. It is not a question for me, it is a question for the club. Maybe the club are going to change my title description. Of course I am the boss, deciding the strategy to play, training, mentality, philosophy in my area, but in another area, I think I am the coach."

Months after that comment and Pochettino was shown the door at Tottenham. His Blues future is now also being questioned as he struggles for results with the Blues in the bottom half.
