Amy Schumer has been labelled a "hero" after standing up to online trolls who mocked her "puffy face".

The actress, 42, hit back at vile comments regarding her appearance last week, opening up about a painful health condition. Amy, who was diagnosed with endometriosis, told her followers she had been suffering from a flare-up, but was being treated with medication.

On Instagram, she penned: “Thank you so much for everyone’s input about my face! I’ve enjoyed feedback and deliberation about my appearance as all women do for almost 20 years. And you’re right it is puffier than normal right now. I have endometriosis, an auto immune disease that every woman should read about. There are some medical and hormonal things going on in my world right now but I’m okay. A woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation."

Following her response, Danielle Payton, thanked the actress for shedding light on the condition. The publicist, whom herself has endometriosis, said: "Amy Schumer is a hero in the endometriosis community for speaking up about our chronic disease with no cure. She is a brave endo warrior bringing the necessary attention to this crippling disease that plagues one in 10 women.

"It is beyond important also that she spoke up when she did, because endometriosis does not have a face. You do not know - and cannot know - who has this whole body auto immune disease unless they tell you. Endometriosis has its ups and its downs, and when the body flares up, as Amy's did, it is often noticeable."

Danielle continued to say she was proud of the star for speaking up about the life altering disease. According to the NHS, endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes and can affect women of any age. The official NHS site adds: "It's a long-term condition that can have a significant impact on your life."

Speaking of her own situation, Danielle went on: "On a daily basis, I experience gruelling pains, that feel like a rusted medieval torture device is stabbing me on the regular. Now add in what feels like battery acid being thrown onto my organs, and couple that with non-stop nausea, lethargy, and also trying to lead a regular life... a few times a day. It is not easy, at all."

She urged people to do their research on the, especially with March marking Endometriosis Awareness Month. "We need awareness now more than ever," Danielle said. "As this disease slowly is making its way mainstream, we absolutely have to continue the conversation and keep it going. Us endo warriors are sick of not having even a temporary solution or relief, or a cure."

As well as her endometriosis diagnosis, Amy recently confirmed she has Cushing's syndrome. She told Jessica Yellin's News Not Noise newsletter she got a health check which revealed her symptoms that had been trolled were also part of her diagnosis.

The NHS states that one of the main signs of Cushing syndrome is weight gain and more body fat. It says this includes increased fat on your chest and tummy, but slim arms and legs, while people can also get a red, puffy and rounded face.
