Sam Eggington explains why he won't change fighting style for sake of his health

Sam Eggington has shut down any concerns over his health after being involved in several brutal tear-ups.

Eggington, 30, is back in action for the first time this year when he takes on Abass Baraou in Telford tonight. The 42-fight veteran won consecutive fights last year and will look to upset the odds against Baraou, who has only been beaten once. Eggington is known for his no-nonsense fighting style and he doesn't plan on changing that at this stage in his career.

“You can’t jump in the shower without getting wet," Eggington told Mirror Fighting. "It is what is but it’s my job. It’s boxing and it’s the way I box, it’s nothing new. I have all my checks every year and I’m perfectly fine, I don’t stutter. I dribble, but I’ve always dribbled. It doesn’t matter how many fights you have, you could have one fight or two fights. If that stuff is going to happen it will happen.

"I don’t stress it, if you overthink that stuff you might as well quit. It does get a bit much, people say stuff like that and I don’t get what they expect me to say. ‘Alright then, you know what I’ll do then I’ll quit.’ Obviously not, it’s not going to happen." Twice a winner of domestic Fight of the Year, Eggington is hoping to be more active this year having only fought twice in 2023.

"Last year was dreadful really, after I fought Joe Pigford I thought something would happen and it just didn't for certain reasons. When I get this win and get this belt, things should come off of it. I want to do leisure centre and local fights if I have to. I don't mind if it's a leisure centre or a football field, I just want to stay active," he added.

"I enjoy my job, I enjoy the hard work and the stuff that people don't like to do. I enjoy training in the heat, the sprints and all of that. I'd do it if it was 20,000 people watching or it was just me and my coach. As long as there's money in the bank, I don't need eyeballs on me or to be front page news."
