Warning after boy, 5, chokes to death on his own vomit in front of them

Heartbroken parents who had fertility treatment to start a family watched in horror as one of their five-year-old identical twin sons choked on his own vomit during a coughing fit.

The incident took place in the Erdek district of Balikesir province in Turkey's Marmara region on February 27. Victim Ulas Topcu got sick at home and vomited, according to local media. But the vomit reportedly got stuck in his windpipe and he was rushed to the Ocaklar Health Centre by his worried mother Nilay Topcu.

Despite being treated by doctors, Ulas, seen in photographs with his twin brother Altay during happier times, passed away. His body was taken to the Bursa Forensic Medicine Institute morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Local media reported that Nilay and her husband Ismail Topcu had received medical treatment after they were unable to have children, leading to them having identical twins five years ago. Studies show that the probability of having twins after receiving IVF treatment is higher than with a natural pregnancy.

One study conducted in the US showed that around 40 per cent of all IVF pregnancies resulted in multiple births, either with twins, triplets, or more babies. In comparison, twins only occur in about two per cent of natural pregnancies.

The Erdek Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the death. In Germany in October last year, a little girl died after choking on her own vomit before her dad dumped her body in a river.

Sascha Wensing, 40, and his wife Maja Wensing, 39, are in custody over the death of their three-year-old daughter in Dinslaken, North Rhine-Westphalia. Wensing admitted dumping the body of his daughter - identified only as L - in the Rhine-Herne Canal river on October 1, but only confessed five days later.

The girl, who had reportedly been locked in a dark basement room for days, had died from choking on vomit while eating porridge, forensics revealed. There is no information on whether his wife admitted to participating in the killing.

Now it has emerged that seven youth welfare workers are under investigation as well. The employees from the Dinslaken Youth Welfare Department are accused of not taking appropriate action after being informed about a possible case of child neglect in the Wensing family.
