I've always been a huge fan of Dave Myers - and his Hairy Biker co-star Si King - their delicious food, no-nonsense cookery advice and delicious recipes had me hooked from the very beginning.

I also felt a special affiliation to Dave - we're both from Barrow-in-Furness. A town few have heard of and those who have for all the wrong reasons.

So on the night of my Dad's surprise 60th birthday bash, I could hardly believe my luck when we walked into the pub and who were there enjoying their own night out - Dave and Si. I'm ashamed to say I couldn't resist popping over to say a quick hello and tell them both what a massive fan I was.

Both were absolutely lovely and seemed genuinely delighted people enjoyed their work. The banter on TV is definitely not fake, they were hilarious and the least 'starry' celebrities you could have imagined. In fact they both seemed totally baffled they were famous. Then they glanced over at our 30-plus strong party of people celebrating my Dad's milestone and without missing a beat Dave offered to buy drinks - along with Si - before coming over to congratulate the birthday boy.

They could not have been nicer, or happier, to be part of the celebrations. After about two minutes everyone felt like they were pals with the pair and especially Dave (not only because he had that lovely Barrovian accent). Their generosity, kindness - not to mention their banter - made what was already a special night even more so.

The millions of people who watched The Hairy Bikers' many TV shows or bought their cookery books knew how warm and genuine the duo were and Dave Myers showed his fame and fortune hadn't changed him at all. He was still a lovely, funny, man of the people - and I'll always be grateful that he made a 60-year-old's surprise birthday even happier.
