Juan Pujalte, a cycler from the Valverde team, has died aged just 18 after suffering a fatal accident during training.

The tragic news was confirmed by The Cycling Federation of the Region of Murcia (FCRM), who released an official statement. The statement read: "With all the pain in our heart we have to report the death by accident of Juan Pujalte Martinez, member of the Murcia cycling team. The great cycling family will miss you."

Pujalte, who was born in 2005, was part of the Valverde Team Ricardo Fuentes; a group of promising youngsters sponsored by former Spanish cyclist, Alejandro Valverde.

It is understood that the teenager died after suffering an accident during a training session which took place near Escombreras, in Cartagena.

A new report from Elpais has outlined that the cause of the accident which left Pujalte with fatal injuries is currently unclear.

Pujalte grew up in the Murcia region and his aptitude for cycling was spotted at a young age after racing in junior events. It's reported he was on the cusp of becoming a professional despite his age.

Tributes have already been paid to Pujalte on social media in the aftermath of his death. One user on Twitter/X posted: "Just out of the junior category with his whole life ahead of him.. RIP Juan Pujalte." Another used said: "News that is even more painful when it comes to someone with their entire life ahead of them. RIP Juan Pujalte."
