Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino slams 'unfair' Gary Neville again

Mauricio Pochettino has again hit out at Gary Neville over his "billion pound bottle jobs” jibe.

The Manchester United icon made the comment after seeing Chelsea lose the Carabao Cup final to a severely depleted Liverpool - Virgil van Dijk netting an extra-time winner. Despite that defeat, Chelsea have managed to progress in the FA Cup.

The Blues edged past Championship side Leeds 3-2 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, where Neville’s comments were mentioned again. Pochettino had an amusing response to being asked, and claimed that the “unfair” label will now stick.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Chelsea boss said: “Gary, my friend, what did you do? Because his opinion now is always around and around and around. Come on, of course I cannot agree about that.

“With all my love to Gary, I think it is not fair to use this type of word about a team that is so brave and a club that is always showing to fight for big things.”

That occasion was not the only time that Pochettino hit back at Neville in the aftermath of Chelsea’s win against Leeds. The Argentine was also asked about the character of his side and had another jokey response.

Pochettino replied: "I think if you are talking about my friend Gary... I think it was not a bad intention. I think he was frustrated because Liverpool won another title, and that is true. I already talked about that, I think it's not fair to accuse in this way, a team that is very young."

Pochettino’s latest bite back comes after his immediate response at Wembley. Speaking immediately after Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool, he once again called the comments unfair, and pointed to the young age of his side as an explanation as to why they couldn’t get over the line.

He said: “I don’t know how you can describe this situation, but for sure I feel proud of the players, I think they made a big effort. We are a young team and (it is) nothing to compare with Liverpool (just) because they finished with also a few young players. I think it’s impossible (to compare the two sides).

“He (Neville) knows, he knows the dynamics are completely different. I think it’s not fair to talk in this way, if he said that. But I think we are going to keep strong and keep believing in this project and see what we can do in the future.”

Pochettino will be aiming to prove Chelsea’s credentials once again as they return to Premier League action. The Blues travel to Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
